FV4005 - Is there any logic to how HESH works?

This video shows that the destruction of the crew by excess pressure can be initiated at a large distance from the roof of the hull. However, sometimes for some reason it is not initiated close to the roof of the hull:

HESH is one of those shells which has constantly been gimped and messed with and never quite performing as it should. There was a rework of the shell a few months ago which made it act like an HE shell sometimes which worked really well, you could nuke a T90 from an upper plate hit with the centurion AVRE and FV4005 as you would expect from an explosive shell the weight of a teenager. It quietly got reverted after a couple of weeks back to its very poor condition that it is now

it might work at long range from armor, but not at short range. It’s more than just a nerf. It’s magic.

the crazy thing is that HESH should work better at close range because of the kinetic energy needed to “pancake” the shell correctly, which in the case of the 165mm and 183mm probably would act like a SAP HE shell on lighter armour just from the sheer mass, yet lighter stuff seems to survive hits incredibly well, Ive had BMP-3s eat direct hits and continue like its nothing.

HESH needs to be remodelled by a guy that actually knows how squashhead works, and actually uses it in game so they give a damn
