Fv4005 has been restored! Maybe gaijin can update the model in game to be more accurate now

I don’t know.

@Exocetta does make some good points and is really knowledgeable about a good bit of things so I wouldn’t say that. I’d just say that they want more proof is all because they’re spectacle

Assuming that is an M2 for a moment… Given the time period when the Brits were using “ranging rifles”, likely what they were doing was ballistically matching the ammo to the gun as part of the development program(e). This does not mean it was a useful MG. Again, there are no photos of this on the tank when it was doing tank stuff.

Someone here is… but its not me.

theres not many photos of FV4005 doing anything, and that is a browning 50 machine gun, if you’ve ever seen one you cant mistake it

Are you sure about that?

Yes. But I’ve never seen a ranging MG with a box mag like seen in that photo. Only the clips like found on the M50. And there are clearly 2 of them, one on each side. One that holds the ammo and one that catches the brass (Right side). There’s also a brass ramp coming out of the right too. It also really does look like a M2 or maybe even an M1919. But I’ve never seen those used for ranging…

But then again I’m not the most knowledgeable on MG mounts and stuff.

You also make a good point about there not being any more photos, so we can’t really know for sure

Yeah its a strange photo. The Brits tended to do odd things while “tinkering”. But as I wrote earlier, the context makes it unlikely it was fitted with an MG mount.

Yeah. I was trying to figure out how it would have been aimed, and all I could think of is remote controlled. I don’t see any firing mech on the mount itself, except maybe a single trigger in the middle, but it’s kinda blurry and I can’t tell really.

Lol. Someone slipped a little brandy in their tea XD

There is probably an equally convoluted linkage to the main gun.

Hmm maybe

ill just add further information here on FV4005 from this years tankfest showguide for you including a higher quality version of the image.

FV4005 was a possible stopgap tank9 before the final vehicle was finished, similar to how the Caernarvon (centurion turret on the universal tank hull) was the stopgap while the conqueror was finished.

And yes (as seen on the second side) It was an M2 50 cal

No it was not. It was purely a test bed for the “discount” engineeringly simplified version of the 183mm gun after the semi-auto loaded version was dropped.
Again, find another source that shows that it actually being used not just different scans of the same one.

this is information directly from The tank museum they not only own the tank but have all of the documents on the tests.

the mounting holes are still visible on the remaining FV4005 as seen in videos by the guy that restored it
sorry to Mr hewes for the muggy screenshot but it shows the holes

Same source. The holes don’t mean it was for a MG. Hewes also mentions that its not agreed (by The TM) either.

if youre referring to his comments on people saying it wasn’t a thing, I think his sarcastic tone says it all. He was just unsure whether the Tank museum will put a 50 cal back onto the roof, not of one never being mounted

I’m not surprised that is your interpretation.
Hewes is not a historian. At all. He is just a tank nerd UToober.

Hi there.

Unfortunately we cannot make changes based on videos alone generally and the restoration of the vehicle currently hasn’t indicated any errors present in the current vehicle.

It’s with noting that restored vehicles are not always accurate representations of how the vehicle was historically and not always viable to use as a means for any change.

Equally it goes without saying that’s museums themselves can also make errors or mistakes. So we generally rely on official documentation, manuals, blueprints or any other original primary source material when considering changes to vehicles of this nature.

With that said, if you do have meaningful source material or documentation for the FV4005 that you believe show an error on the current vehicle, please feel free to submit them here on our official reporting site: Community Bug Reporting System
