Description:
HMCS Fundy was the first of her class of minesweepers to be built in Canada, for service with the Royal Canadian Navy. Built pre-war, HMCS Fundy would serve in the Canadian Atlantic seaboard during the Second World War.
Her design was partially based on that of the Royal Navy’s Basset-class, with four Fundy-class vessels being built in Canadian Yards. She was the first warship built for Canada since the First World War.
This suggestion is for HMCS Fundy at the end of the war in 1945.
History:
Ordered on the 23rd August 1937, her keel was laid on the 24th of January 1938 at Collingwood Shipyards Ltd, Collingwood, Ontario. She launched on the 18th of June 1938, and commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy on the 1st of September 1938.
When she commissioned, she was assigned to the Atlantic seaboard of Canada with one of her sisters, HMCS Gaspe, the other two of her class being stationed on the Pacific seaboard. Upon the outbreak of war in 1939, the pair of Fundy-class vessels in Halifax were the only two warships available to patrol the entrance to Halifax Habour.
Patrolling and sweeping harbours were to be HMCS Fundy’s main role during the Second World War, however she also assisted convoy escort duties to and from Halifax. In early 1945 Fundy and Gaspe rescued 66 survivors from SS Matrin Van Buren, which had been torpedoed.
Sometime between 1942 and 1944 she gained two single 20mm Oerlikon mounts in addition to her 4 inch gun.
Nearing the end of the war, she was seen as obsolete and unnecessary to the RCN, considering the large amounts of minesweeping vessels available for the fleet, which were simultaneously more modern, better suited for conditions, and less worn than the seven year old ship.
She was decommissioned on the 27th of July 1945 and laid up for sale. She would be sold to Marine Industries Ltd in 1947 for mercantile use. She would also be refitted, as to replace her steam engines with a modern diesel one. She was renamed Aigle Marin in 1967, then again Anne R.D in 1977. She was broken up in July 1987.
