The Flakpanzer | Gepard is an air defence vehicle, armed with two 35mm Oreleikon Cannons. In War Thunder, it is capable of firing up to 1 200 rounds/min, while in real life, it’s fire rate can be changed to lower RPM’s. Why isn’t this implemented?
It would be nice to have, but I doubt it would be a priority for Gaijin sadly :\
Yea :(
Selective rate of fire would be cool. Especially for the APDS.
The service RoF is 550rpm per gun, i.e. 1100rds/min combined.
This is also the case in-game.
Also what is your source for a “low-rpm mode”? Honestly the first time I’ve heard about there being one.
I am former Swiss Air Force air defense Skyguard FCR officer. I can tell you from my servicedays GJ did limit the use of the 35-mm cannon in several aspects.
Ammunition. There is way more available ammo than what GJ is making available.
We fired in a peacetime salvo at a reduce ratio and for the war times the cannon was set to fire “Kriegssalve” which was only set for demonstration purposes.
Each ammo contained on the canno had 40 belts with 7 rounds ending in a total of 280 rounds per side. We did load this irrelevant of the ammo we loaded.
Strangly GJ limited the secondary ammo. Balancing?
Double standarts. When its Thai Kh38 its “If it was possible why not”, and with APDS on Gepards its “In reality they loaded APDS belts in separate containers as last defence so no mixed APDS belt for you”-ish shit. Same reason why the ZA-35 doesnt have the APDS at all
Gepards (a.o.) cant use mixed full and sub-calibre belts because of the difference in muzzle velocities (1175m/s ±5m/s vs 1385m/s ±5m/s up to 1440m/s), which wouldnt allow the FCS to lead properly.
The Gepard 1 A2 did fire full belts of FAPDS (DM 33) though, which replaced (or was intended to atleast) all other ammunition-types used prior (DM 13 A1 APHEI-T, DM 21 HEI, DM 31 HEI-T & DM 23 APDS-T).
ZA-35 didnt have APDS (its also a different cannon, even though it can fire the same ammo). It instead had;
APCI-T (HVAP basically), base fuzed HEI, APHEI-T (equivalent; DM 13 A1) and PD-Fuzed HEI (equiv.: DM 21) and HEI-T (equiv.: DM 11 A1 & DM 31)
Just for the record, XM246 had APDS-T but lacks the additional belts between the guns for it.
Does that mean that AP and HE have same muzzle velocity?
Ah but it TECHNCALLY CAN use the same APDS. that was the whole point
Absolutely correct.
This is why we always loaded 280 bullets of the same round IRL.
But GJ does not even allow this. I cannot load a full ammo FAPDS into a Gepard in game.
Yes, all full-calibre shells have the same muzzle velocity.
The APCI-T does have a slightly different MV of 1200m/s, however that is a figure from the old Oerlikon one (1968) so I am not certain whether it applies to the one used by ZA-35.
Not certain whether the FCS is designed for it, afaik ZA-35 also doesnt have external belts, so the use would be restricted to full belts (as the difference in MV is much higher than the e.g. ±20m/s like on APCI-T vs HEI/HEI-T/HEI(base fuze)/APHEI-T) as it cant be mixed with the other types.
yeah, according to gaijin the apds rounds can only be in the outer belt, which contains 40 rounds total
would be cool to have, but why would you ever do this? kinda useless, just like on the 2a42 for ex
Which isnt exactly incorrect as only Gepard 1 A2 was designed to solely use sub-calibre ammunition (DM 33 FAPDS)
The external belt on all other KDA based vehicles (XM246 should also have it, ZA-35 uses a different gun) was used for self defense against heavily armoured targets and was fitted with APDS-T rounds for that reason.
If you find evidence you can get that added through a bug report. After killing every tank with the OP trash that is the 35mm SPAAs we dont get much ammo left for when players remember they are in an SPAA so being able to slow the fire rate down for tank slaughter would be an improvement.
I got the Stormer AD a ROF buff and a ROF speed selection implemented, will be coming with this update. it can be done
Ye, ppl just use the 35mm’s as a tank slaughterer more than SPAA :/
And I hat how good 35mm is for it.
my question is: why would u like to give this thing lower RPM?
the only reason of why it’s so good for destroying air vehicles and tanks is cuz it has insanely high RPM to shoot things from the other side of the map without needing to aim too high.
more accuracy maybe? you could hold down instead of tapping the trigger to fire more accurately maybe idk
Accuracy/dispersion arent affected by RoF though.
Maxmium angular devation has one fixed value for vertical and horizontal, lower rpm modes wouldnt change that.
