Fix/Nerf weapon damage

Hello everyone.

So I think it’s about time we took another look at the damage being dealt by certain weapons. Namely the Breda-Safat .50 calibre and the Shvak 20mm.

Both weapons were historically known as weaker armaments to be fitted to aircraft. In game for whatever reason this is not the case. The Shvak is arguably… somehow… the best 20mm cannon in the game whilst the Breda can also completely shred aircraft in tiny bursts. For a quick demonstration here’s some Simulator gameplay footage (same flight model and damage model as RB) displaying what happens when 2x slow firing Italian .50s hit an aircraft.

Now bear in mind as you can see I’m far from the best shot in the world and in two different clips I fold a P400, the first clip shows the wing being completely severed in a short burst and in the other I clip the wingtip and it instantly detaches causing him to crash. I also completely dissect a Spitfire and as for the Mustang I don’t think anything was left…

Oh… and don’t forget the Yak-1B whose tail gets sawed clean off (something that should only happen with large calibre cannons).

This is not a one-off instance as can be seen, this is happening quite regularly and with a handful of rounds impacting the target. With the Shvak it takes even less than what you can see here, one tiny burst of a Shvak can annihilate a bomber when in reality pilots complained they weren’t even enough to reliably bring down 190F’s.

This isn’t just destroying immersion but it’s also damaging the gameplay for those on the receiving end of the gunfire. You have zero chance to fight back (when you absolutely should in these cases).

Realistically nerf the Shvak and the Breda’s. Please for the love of god DON’T buff the other rounds to match these. Cheers.

The problem is that since the start of WT the only functional rounds were always AP and explosive rounds.
Till this day Gaijin hasn’t done anything to make incendiary rounds useful, to the point where now 20mm or 30mm Incendiary rounds are performing worse than 12.7mm bullets.

Pretty much the only few changes that ever happened to aircraft guns was the change that made Mineshells more deadly, implemented explosive 12.7mm and then realShattter.

All changes only ever affected explosive shells.

Well actually, they did nerf 12.7mm M23 Incendiary bullets and 30mm Incendiary shells. lol

Now 90% of fights end with a broken wing or tail and non-explosive rounds are simply a downgrade over explosive.

But it’s not only explosive rounds, even AP can quickly shred structure, just that HE is simply a lot better.

For a short time before realShatter didn’t blow wings or tails straight off, the damage of ShVAKs was pretty much on point.
Using default belts you had API and HEFI that could damage fuel tanks, cooling systems, engine and pilot, with good chances of setting fires.

Now you just load 100% HE to just blow off wings or tails in a single burst, with needing just 1-2 shells to connect.

If they applied your modification, they would have to lower the BR of all Italian aircraft, but then incompetent people would start complaining that Italy is no longer the easy prey to kill in the game.

the “tail cut loose” mechanic always felt badly implemented, maybe due to lack of modules for the tail, But only requires to shoot at a black tail with any caliber from any angle since you can get your tail cut off from a head-on + it just looks goofy sometimes specially on twin boom planes

It’s also sad when it’s happening from LMG fire.

Maybe MGs can saw through a wing spar when enough bullets hit in the same area but having your planes armor absorb all the bullet just to have your plane gets its tail fall off is just stupid.

maybe even having a tail spar module like the wings would slightly help fill that empty space inside most tail sections
