First Generation Harriers discussion about flight performance and capabilities

Devs: “Clearly a marketing lie, we will nerf the FM more, and while we’re at it add on a couple hundred degrees to the engine temps because we feel like it.”

But seriously hopefully the devs actually look at this and actaully fix the Harriers. Or at least buff them a bit to the point where they aren’t as manoeuvrable as lead block in the hands of an infant.

Awesome Stuff. Hopefully this can finally get this settled. You making a new Bug Report for this?

A few Tech Mods are actually going to work together to file an internal report.

The one test I presented them listed 6.5G sustained at .7 Mach for a weight of 15500 lbs and they said this is not possible.

This chart says it can sustain 6G at .7 Mach while being almost 1 ton heavier.

Great work, thanks for your dedication

I hope one day we can have the Harriers not modelled off what the Yak 38’s failed to achieve

I cannot wait
seriously I wanna have fun in the harriers again

I hope so still I wouldn’t have be surprised if the devs said this is clear marketing lies.

They need to fix the IR sigs too.

do update us on how that goes, in the meantime I (and I think many others) are waiting in significant trepidation…

Did they let a scale modeller add panel lines to it?

i think its just super dirty, covered in moss and it was raining

Well I am yet to hear anything. Could be a year or more if we are being honest unless people actually complain.
Just for you folks I’ll test the aircraft in this weight and configuration so we know what it needs to be buffed by.

Well here is the results.
Sustained is 12.5 at 350 knots in game compared to 14 IRL

Sustained at .75 Mach is only 11 in game compared to 14 or so IRL

Instantaneous is only 17 a second compared to the almost 20 seen at 500 knots

All in all the Harriers IRL turn performance is actually better than I originally thought. This makes the lack of performance in game really sad. The Harrier would basically maneuver as a really high TWR Hunter if modeled correctly and at low altitude could easily energy trap enemies while not losing almost any energy yourself as you have a stupid amount of thrust.

To add to this from what was learned in the Sea Harrier Frs.1 manual a whole .5G can be added to ITR at 400 knots with the use of mid flap setting.
It seems like the Harriers maneuverability, acceleration, and advanced avionics where just as deadly if not more so than the AIM-9L during the Falklands. Despite many people claiming the the Harrier was no good at all without them.

Is a bug report filed with this ‘em diagram?

I was watching videos on the Harrier vs Mirage dogfights during the Falklands and thinking what they were describing would never be possible in WT. Now we know the Harrier’s true flight performance it makes a lot more sense as to why they performed so well.

Yeah hearing stories about them is what made me start all this to begin with. The Harriers massive TWR and good aerodynamic design would allow the Harrier to bleed other jets of their energy long before the Harrier is at a disadvantage.

It has been passed to a senior Tech Mod.

Is there anything known that relates the Later “Big wing” Harrier / AV-8B performance to the First gen?

Yes a few things for the Kingston big wing
