The Fiat C.R.33 was a prototype biplane fighter aircraft developed by the Italian company Fiat Aviazione in the 1930s. Designed by engineer Celestino Rosatelli, the C.R.33 was an improved version of its predecessor, the Fiat C.R.32, with a more powerful engine and some structural changes.
The first flight of the C.R.33 occurred in 1935, but despite its promising performance, the aircraft never entered mass production or active service. Only three prototypes were built. Engine development problems and Regia Aeronautica’s preference for radial-engined aircraft, which were less vulnerable to combat damages, led to the decision not to continue with the project.
The C.R.33 was equipped with a 700 hp Fiat A.33 RC.35 engine and could reach a top speed of 422 km/h. It had a range of 700 km and could go up to an operational ceiling of 10,500 m. The armament consisted of two Breda-SAFAT 12.7 mm in the nose and two 7.7 mm machine guns in the wings (like the C.R.32 BIS already in game).
Despite its short history, the Fiat C.R.33 remains an interesting example of the Italian aeronautical design of the pre-World War II period and the continuous search for improvement in the performance of the biplane fighters of the time despite the inevitable obsolescence of this type of plane
