From 1964-1968, The US Navy squadron VF-84 flew the F-4B Phantom II; they saw 7 months of active combat in the Vietnam War and wore one of the most famous squadron camouflages in history, Comprised of a beautiful combination of black, white, and yellow. They were known as The Jolly Rogers.
In 1968, VF-84 retired their F-4B’s in exchange for the upgraded F-4J, The F4J upgrade also introduced the most famous f4 version of their camo (mainly it was a minor change to the tail, it was an actual flag but they changed it to have the entire vertical stabilizer painted black with the skull and crossbones).
While by this time, their involvement in Vietnam had ended, their legacy did not. While the squadron’s F-4J did not see very much action at all, it was still an important squadron, with its most iconic moments yet to come. In 1974, the squadron switched to F-4N’s, and its history was much the same as the J’s.
VF-84’s moment came in 1978 when the squadron did away with their F-4’s and donned their most famous aircraft: the F-14. In 1980, the squadron made its debut in the movie; The Final Countdown (1980). Since then VF-84’s camo has remained one of the most famous aircraft liveries to exist, and its legacy has continued to live on in spirit.
VF-84 is not well represented in War Thunder, despite the ability for it to be. Even in official War Thunder videos, they have featured this livery. However, it is not available within the game to a large chunk of the player base. That is why today I am suggesting that VF-84’s livery be added to the F4J.
