F15C/E and F16C Legion IRST pod

It would be neat for the Legion IRST pod to be added to the United States’ fighter jets as it would be an interesting thing to have except the Eurofighter and the russian aircrafts which have them integrated.

would be cool to see on the F-15C. also, the IRST21 from which the pod is derived is on super hornets in the form of a external fuel tank attachemnt

they made fun of russian jets having irst systems but what are they installing on f-15’s in 2022…

well, to be fair, it was because their radars mostly sucked and until fairly recently the only production stealth fighters were on our side

their irst existed due to their different operational doctrine
now we are scared that our radars cant detect their stealth jets

Eh not really. Yeah, detecting LO targets is part of it, but the bigger benefit is that as a passive sensor, you can’t jam it like you can jam radar. That’s pretty valuable in an EW heavy battlespace

who did and why? the eurofighter, f22, f35 have it and f14d did, so why would some people laugh at a system which isn’t obsolete and still useful to this day

because usa laughed at russians but started using it themselves in their modernized jets after realizing its not so stupid

very interesting, this was before they started the development on the 5th gen? because that would be the most logical as both of the f22 and f35 have it integrated and not part of an upgrade package

f14d’s irst upgrade ioc was before f22 ioc if that is what you meant?

i mean yeah i know that, i was just talking about the modern era because i thought the people who said irst isn’t good or “useless” were talking about the present times

i know that f14d’s irst system entered operational capability in 1991
