F-14 Tomcat: History, Performance & Discussion

yeah, i still don’t understand why it is 9 while everything else got bumped to 19km

This the notch is real. The F-14 is missing it’s aspect toggle. Close in is a mess, head on is about the only reliable aspect for radar. It has a high skill ceiling vs AMRAAMs.
Harriers feel much more useful at that BR outside of BVR. The F-14B faces some tough opponents in ARB at it’s rating.

The Tomcat has several different “ACM” modes, most of which have 5 nm (~9km) range.

yeah at 13.0 its sorely outmatched by just about everything, but now with the 13.3 plague its somewhat more usable, su30s seem to have an allergy to living

to follow up on what i was talking about:

this is my current f14a loadout, most phoenixes with one aim7e2 for the larp, its a meme loadout because trying to tryhard with it in arb is just not fun. most of my kills are people just eating aim54s sub 15 kilometers.

edit; the only non meme part ive found is that aim54s can sometimes be better than any aim7 even at relatively close ranges, by virtue of the radar being so tempermental against non hdn targets.

big sad, this is quite a disadvantage

what would PAL entail?

The F-14 is definitely not as bad as you say it is. (The B, at least)
It could get 9Ms (and the 14A get 9Ls) and I think it would still be about the same.

Even so, the “Worst” aircraft at some Br is purely up to preference.

Like, most people would say the MiG-29 9.13 and 29G are the worst 13.0s, because their poor radar, bad RWR, poor fm, and lack of missiles (especially Fox-1s).

A plane being good or bad is up to the experience of the person playing it. People have different play styles, and some people just get lucky in their match maker.

definetly not though

It’s hard to explain. But it’s essentially a BVR ACM mode.

It scans 40x20 (I think?) and goes out to 30km, and it locks the first bandit it sees.

Don’t forget that the ALR-34 IRSTS & AXX-1 TCS should be functional too, and so cover angular tracking in the notch.

to add to this, aim9ms would be a huge buff exactly because the tomcat struggles so bad in rear and side aspect. i agree that 9l on f14a wouldnt change much because 9l is at its best as ambush missile which aim9h does fine though

the 14A it might change alot, since it’s going from rear aspect 9H’s to all aspect.

But the B? I’m not so sure. I mostly ever fire 9Ls at people who aren’t looking. I’m sure the 9M would help a decent bit for the average Tomcat player, but for more experienced pilots I don’t think It would make a major difference.

aim9m would open up a ton of possibilities you straight up dont have without it

@Zannafrancy @GitGood

Here’s a video describing how PAL works, (Yes, I know it’s DCS, but I can’t find the F-14 manual right now)

appreciate it

Strangely it’s a Pulse STT not a Pulse Doppler STT.

that would make it more susceptible to chaff right?

And ground interference I think.
