F-14 Tomcat: History, Performance & Discussion

IIRC, wasn’t the funding shifted towards the LANTRIN pod (making it the bombcat essentially) and apparently Dick Cheney having a grudge against the Tomcat as well?

Yes it was a great idea too and yes he did witch is why I personally despise/loath that man

I think most people do lmao.

Either way I wondered how some of these projects would’ve gone especially with the AIM-152 would’ve gone if the Cold War was still hot for a bit longer.

Would’ve been interesting and nice to see the American equivalent of the Meteor (IIRC Raytheon’s version was Ramjet)

Not exactly, it was shifted to funding the development and rollout of the “T3” upgraded LANTIRN, Fleet wide instead of to the 14D / -14D(R) only. Which permitted the pod to automatically generate (targeting quality) and upload GPS/INS reference coordinates of a target point based on the rangefinder and look-angle, and transfer them over the wire via datalink (Link4C & Link -16). Or do the reverse to point the Targeting pod at a reference coordinate provided over datalink.

So it avoided needing the RIO to manually enter data into each weapon individually or slew the pod by hand to a point of interest based off mental math comparing differential grid coordinates of a target reference and their own-ship readout.

So it basically made the F-14 much better in an A2G & FAC role, where in the Threat environment no longer had a threat that needed a Long Range Missile to deal with.

Oh, really?

Well, @tripod2008 gave a better explanation than me, but yeah. Sounds like that AMRAAM money was shifted toward what they explained.

I think it’s fine, but—

I prefer the AIM-152.

Well, it’s not really about performance or anything; it’s more about the romance and looks. Personally, I’m not a big fan of the AMRAAM.

Each their own would be cool to see the aim152 but I don’t think gajin would added a missile like that that would require some what good amount of “I think it acts like or pull this much or go this fast etc….” Witch could be hard for them to balance it

Yeah, you’re right…

I might as well just give up and build a plastic model instead. ( ´ཫ` )

Don’t give up you never know if you find new info on it or new released photo of it what I do for the f-14 with aim120. I think their a forum called secret project forums it’s a good place to find info

I had a whole thing typed out but I scrolled down and you did it better and in less words than mine lmao. Bravo.

Thank you.

But I’m really at my limit now…

After the 14B implementation, I was made to wait a whole year, and during that time ARB turned into a nightmare, completely sapping my motivation…

Plus, this year is crucial for my life, so once spring passes, I won’t have any time left…

The ACMID (Aim-152 prototype) was mentioned in a documentary here: https://youtu.be/h5tYY9gIdbs

Found some interesting images of a missile development by McDonnell Douglas. Carrier aircraft seems to be a Tomcat.

APG-71 + AMRAAMs and 9Ms at 13.3? I Cant see it really happening, look at F-15E and F-15C MSIP, 15E has a better radar, but the main difference between them is the performance, and the performance of F-14D wont be that worst (in relation to F-15C MSIP) to drop it to 13.3, while having a better radar (even better than APG-70?)

So30mk2 shares the same radar as su27sm and has fox3 and irccm missiles and theirs other planes with fox 3 or irccm or both at that br like jf17,f16adf,tornado f3.Late, mig29n,f16D barak 2, j-8f and probably a few others plus I not saying it indefinitely should be in 13.3 just saying it could work and if it doesn’t they can nerf it to 13.7

This is my first time seeing it! It’s really nice!

The F-14 should be able to use it’s flap/slats at around 900-1000km/h instead of the~700km/h it’s limited to now.
