F-111's flight model so hideously messed up that you can pull negative Gs and maintain energy better than positive G

Was just doing some testing, and if not for fuel starvation kicking in, it’s the best way of turning the plane currently. Why didn’t GD just simply make the plane upside down if according to Snail brain the plane should lose 23 kts by pitching a bit to change your climb angle from 5 degrees to 10 degrees, are they stupid?

Still better modelled than the harriers. Vark can turn at a sustained rate

I’m sure the Vark model is way more botched than the Harriers. The harriers can actually turn around at high speed without falling out of the sky.

Harriers energy retention is extremely gimped, were missing 1°/s turn and a solid amount of AOA, doesn’t sound like much IK but its quite huge for even being able to defend yourself from all the supersonics. also have like half of the available thrust above Mach 0.8 missing so we cant even regain lost energy from a single turnfight for a very long time. The harrier 1 should handle close to how harrier 2 is modelled in game.

Vark will win subsonic dogfights quite easily from my experience with the F111C, I quite like it as a jet turnfighter as it hammers MIG 23 and 21 quite well

The Harrier is underperforming quite a lot more than 1*/s. Last I read it was supposed to do 15*/s with combat load but in game, clean, it will only do 11*/s.

But the Vark comparatively is definitely doing far worse.

Friend of mine @MatrixRupture has done a lot of very good research into the air performance of Harrier and its around a degree per second missing. he put together a video showing it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikFcTIZeXUA) and has done loads of reports which keep getting shot down despite accurate info

Harriers should be able to fight F15s and quite well too

Yes I know I’ve been on his threads.

anyway before we throw this thread off too much, Vark still handles really well. Wish I could dump fuel like it could tho so I can get out of turnfights quicker

It handles terribly, actually. If you try turning with it above ~40* wing sweep you’ll lose more speed with a mild mouse turn you will with the aibrake sticking out.

May be that i like burning speed to open the wings out to turn harder that I’ve not found it to be an issue. After bombing a base I dive on someone and fire a 9L. if it doesn’t hit I usually force a two circle fight as the Varks thrust to weight will hold me in the air better than most other jets at the BR, plus its all premium pack noobs rn so its extra easy

As it stands in War Thunder the Harrier technically can beat an F-15 if you use the VTOL, which is obviously not what you’re asking for but hey it’s cool.

Yea you can beat any unsuspecting fighter with VIFF, however it shouldn’t be necessary to survive. (it wasn’t a tactic that was ever used as far as we know either)

F-14A and F-111F retains the same energy at every angle of wing both share.

Prove that the F-111F should retain energy better than an F-14A.

Yeah the devs replied and im very pissed as they did none of it correct even miss referenced some of the sources I provided.

For me what really kills it is the terrible acceleration.

I’m okay if a plane has terrible acceleration but a good flight model because it can maintain that energy.

I’m also okay if a plane has a terrible flight model but good acceleration because I can make up that energy quickly.

But the F111F doesn’t have either of that. I recently got the mig23ml (to grind for the su34), and I’ve had more pleasant experience in it than the F-111s. yeah sure it can rip it’s wings a lot easier than the F-111s, however I can reach mach 1.2-3 without doing so. Even when I do turns and lose speed quickly, I can accelerate just as quick.
