it is complete nonsense that an armored personnel carrier that is protected against medium caliber ammunition (30mm) frontally and laterally. every bmp, namer, what do i know … shoots from every side with the first hit as if the tank was made of butter … what’s the point gajin ?
They seem to be able to magically find armour holes, unlike MBT’s which really struggle against the PUMA for whatever reason. I’ve been playing the PUMA for a fair bit and i don’t think its that bad, BMP’s are PUMA food anyway. and keep in mind that normal MBT’s are also killed by the BMP from the side
Which MBT struggles? Anything with darts will penetrate PUMA anywhere. Don’t tell stories. Not even the engine block offers protection from dart penetrations. Puma also spalls alot. You get oneshot all the time.
Tĥe upper front plate of the puma is fairly tanky, even 40mm from the CV90"s has to aim for weak spots. A proper hull down Puma will only have the turret as a weakness and if part of the chassis is showing then they have to aim very carefully. The bottom plate is definitely the weakest part with even 25mm cannons from italy, japan, and britain penning it. Though the 25mm also cant pen the front plate. The 30mm from the puma also struggles to pen the front plate alongside the bushmaster 30mm which of the equipped vehicles the 9030 FIN is the weakest as its armor is not capable of keeping the tank alive in a split second encounter. Saying the armoe cant stop 30mm is both true and false. The engine block can also help stop rounds but if the bottom plate is hit it normally doesn’t go all the way throigh but that depends on angle and distance.
almost every MBT struggles because they don’t aim at the right parts. As you said, if they can actually aim at the crew you get oneshotted. I don’t know how exactly but i have absorbed so many shots. position better maybe? its still a light tank, maybe don’t play it like an MBT
take a look at the damage model and check the kinetic thickness of the Composite side skirts
it’s modeled like they’re empty
and their effectiveness against chemical munitions is equal to that of spaced armor this size
No matter how rosy Gajin paint the data, the gameplay is a completely different. PUMA’s frontal protection benefits immensely from its massive engine mode, rendering it impervious to any 30mm APDS or APFSDS rounds. However, crippling its engine is certainly achievable.PUMA’s side armour is described as incredibly robust solely due to the additional layer of heavy ERA. Once this supplementary armour is destroyed, the exposed hull remains rather vulnerable.
Judging by your description, perhaps you just happened to charge straight into the frontlines and received the most brutal punishment.I would advise that when playing PMUA or any vehicle primarily armed with autocannons, you should fully utilize its high mobility. Seize firing positions on the map that are both well-covered and relatively concealed, exposing only the turret to engage the enemy. Charging to the front lines at the start of a match is highly inadvisable for an IFV, I presume you are not operating a Leopard 2A7V.
ZTZ96s especially as the spam will come in the first week of October. Puma can pen ZTZ96/A/A(P) frontally and being shot in the middle 1/3 of the turret likely results in breech disabled.
but the stupid damage model is completely wrong. because there is no damage model for tanks with an unmanned turret. splinters from a 30mm that scratches the top of the turret kill the crew. so exactly the opposite of what it was designed for.
or that at the slightest scratch anywhere on the turred or the upper hull. automatically in 90% of the cases the slewing ring is in the ass …
yeah but thats the thing isnt it? people, even after nearly 3 years of the Puma being in the game, still dont know where to shoot. I have both played the Puma and against it and I can confirm that you can tank a lot but when I play against them I almost always kill them in one shot, especially since most Puma players play way to aggressive because they think they actually have armor.
Thats a problem ive also had with the Vilkas, though because the crew are further away i normally just have them tuen red or so. Also the puma has a decent turret rotation speed. Either the type 89 or the CV90’s have the slowest rotation speed for an ifv. I agree the crew shouldn’t be damaged from the gun being hit though.
as I said its Composite is modelled as a hollow 2.5mm sheet steel box
and even the damage calculator ignores the “penetration is not possible”
Both the UFP and LFP are massively underperforming tho, with bug reports being in since the dev server of the first Puma. The LFP notably is missing an entire ~50mm plate, and had its faceplate dropped from ~50mm to 15mm in-game (because gaijin let a 4 y/o pick the numbers on the armor despite the visual model for the array being mostly correct and showing the faceplate as the thickest part of the array…). This means that regarding the LFP, the Puma is missing about 85mm of steel (in absolute thickness) and over 100mm of steel (effective).
Also 90% sure the Puma is STANAG 4569 Level 6 (it was rated as level 5 back when level 6 didnt exist, but its hard to find more modern specs) compliant on the front and sides with the armor configuration C, and is STANAG Class 4a/b rated vs mines (10kg blast anywhere beneath or near the vehicle), the Puma just BARELY hits that lvl 6 protection level in certain spots on the front, and does not on the sides, and definitely does not hit the class 4a/b beneath the vehicle…
?
Im not disputing that it isn’t modeled incorrectly, plenty of vehicles with era are like that. I just responded to the post that every 30mm pens the puma. That statement is true if you aim for the weak spots, of the 30mm autocannon tanks around the vehicles with missiles will probably be the biggest threat due to how bad the armor is. The upper front plate is almost invulnerable aside from very specifc parts which id like to see gaijin change as it seems silly to have act the way they due with spalling.
For the most part the main focus both IFV’s will have is to hit the gun. Whoever loses their gun first normally dies depending on distance ect ect
