Eurofighter vs Rafale battlefield

I’d imagine then it would be very much only functional for very close in-range combat where you can visually see the aircraft.

So? Any target where you’d actually use HMD over anything else?

For longer range targets (Aka beyond visual range), especially with a missile like ASRAAM, designed not to be used in a dogfight, you would use Radar or IRST to provide that initial data point.

There is also somewhat evidence of IRIS-T (which also lacks DL) being used as an anti-missile weapon iirc fired from a Typhoon. There is no reason why the DASS couldnt generate the same Azi/Elevation coordinates using a combo of RWR and/or MAWS.

As for the missile acquiring a target at long range. Lock range is estimated in the 20-25km range based upon Raven shooting down small drones iirc. At Mach 5, the missile only needs to travel 15 seconds to acquire something at absolute max reported range of 50km. But realistically, you’d only really be firing most often at targets at the 30-40km mark at most, so that 3-9 seconds after firing before the missile has locked on. (that is also operating on the notion the target is not moving towards you either)

AMK is having work being done and will most likely see integration in the future.
