Eurofighter Typhoon (UK versions) - Technical data and discussion (Part 2)

Hopefully this means the radar wont just drop out constantly, also hopefully TWS will auto-swap to maintain the lock, which again, means we wont have times where the radar is blind.

Was meaning to bring this up with Gunjob and enquire why it didnt have a SRC mode if nothing else

IF nothing bugs out, we still talk about gaijin soooo…

Hold on now, take it easy. We have to ask for things they can realsitically actually fix

Gunna say this now with people active in the thread.

When this update drops. If you get intances of:

  • HMD / ACM not locking a target that is 100% not notching
  • Ghosting
  • Wierd radar updates
  • Whatever new torture gaijin has created
  • etc etc etc

Grab a screenshot with F-12, exit the game and save the gamelog file for that session and ideally save the replay too (File or replay link).

Because past history has taught us anything. Good chance we’ll have new bug reports to submit so lets grab things nice and early.

Its not really “more options”.

Before, the options were:

  • Quasi-STT (narrow) 20x4.1° (horrible narrow scan, but good for tracking a single target)
  • Medium 70x8.4° (best vertical search zone CAPTOR had access too, but still not great comparatively)
  • Wide 140x4.2° (niche use in ground battles to search across the ground for other ppl hugging treetops)

Now the options are:

  • Narrow 15x12.6° (an actual functionnal narrow scan with more vertical search area for finding a target quickly)
  • Medium 30x8.4° (not much actual reason to use this, its effectively a worse narrow scan, but is arguably the “best” normal search pattern CAPTOR now has access to)
  • Wide 60x4.2° (Not much point in ever using this, its just bad)
  • Full 140x4.2° (Retains its niche function of finding ppl mowing the lawn)

Overall, I dont think most players will care much about the change in search patterns, since the spotting system is a massive crutch in that regard for RB. For sim players its a mixed bag imo. The narrow pattern being better now helps a lot for quickly finding targets that are already engaging you, fixing one of the issues the CAPTOR-M always had, buy all the other search patterns are a downgrade in actually searching. This pushes the EFT in a more defensive/reactive role than it was already in before, which is not ideal, since AIM-120’s are pretty bad missiles for that role specifically (they are “shoot first” kinds of ARH’s in WT)

Hmm… Maybe, 30x8.4 doesnt sound too bad if its fast enough, which it might be with half the update time, useful for monitoring an area of space.

Wide, is niche, but again, the scan time is being reuded by more than half. I’ve spent enough time in the Tornado F3 to make 60x5 work just fine usually. So that is almost my bread & butter mode im use to

Though would love to get the ability to basically manually control the zones. Have a keybind for increasing each area independently.

Want 60x12.6? sure, it will take X amount of itme to scan that zone, but you can have it.

30x8.4° at 1.7 sec is just nerfed version of the F-15E’s medium scan, which is 30x10 at 1.7sec to give you some context.

Its useable though.

Fair enough, still. Not a half bad set of changes

Hopefully IF the radar is actually fixed now they will fix some of the dozens of other issues with this damn thing. Still waiting on a working cockpit gunsight that was reported during the dev server for that update.

Yeah I dont mean to sound like a doomer. Most of the changes are good, the scan patterns they chose are just weird to me.

Its also just a change in the wrong direction from how the CAPTOR-M’s search patterns are irl, which is annoying to me, but nothing I can do about that atm unfortunately.

That will take at least 2-3 years to fix. Come on, realisitc expectations :P

Like maybe they’ll fix this within the next 6-18 months

Its pretty clear the scan modes were chosen based upon ARB, not ASB.

As always SB has been forgotten.

But maybe we can annoy Gunjob into annoying the devs to tweak them further

Actually, just looked at it again, the scan modes are just copy pastes of the F-15E’s scan modes, but with the CAPTOR-M’s worse vertical coverage…

Same scan widths and scan times

They just slapped it with the F-15E template xD

I’m in disbelief, radar changes?

All the modes are from the FA2 manual… Soooo

Sounds like a Gaijin move. Maybe all the new CAPTOR-M code is actually just F-15E code with tweaked numbers. Would make sense given the F-15E actually has a working GMTI

The sea harrier manual? You sure? Cuz all the scan modes now match the F-15E’s APG-70 in scan width and scan speed, with tbe difference only being scan height and the “full” scan, which is just the old wide scan

Should be fixed just before the heat death of the universe I reckon if not during it. Anything to do with smoke is at the very bottom of the pile of issues, lower than bomber cockpits. Just look at the Harrier’s chain smoking like my nan since they got added, and that was many years ago.

How feesible/realisitc would it be and how open do you think the devs would be to either custom scan patterns you set-up in a settings page and you could have as many or few as you want (within reason)

(Not actually a bad suggestion, might submit that actually)

or have it so that a keybind could be set to adjust each parameter. i.e

1 setting to change the width through 15, 30, 60, 140 and the other to change the height through 4.2, 8.4 and 12.6.

Iirc, the CAPTOR-M had a lot of automation and flexibility right? So whilst this would be a lot more manual, I dont think it would be necessarily unrealistic

Yeah… Typhoon has a sooty exhaust too, why they seem to just assume aircraft have that is wierd
