Sparows?

Shhhhhhhh

Intresting, he says as well that the WTD 61 /in work together with them 4 new test eurofighters will be put into “service” . Pretty much replacing the IPA 3,7 and 8 i guess

I know this is an old conversation, but I wanted to add some points. In the future, I suspect radar emissions would be something people would attempt to limit as they’d be hyper sensitive to any RWR pings. There would be competitors to Eurofighters that would be able to slave sensors and weapon systems to the direction of radar emissions. Rafale for example is capable of firing MICAs in the direction of RWR pings, so having IRST instead to target aircrafts without putting yourself in danger would be a big asset.

Same goes for the LWR, Rafale is capable of guiding MICA IR at BVR ranges using the LRF, and MAWS would detect it too late at 7.5km away.

Having IRST and LWR on Eurofighter would contribute greatly to survivability.

Firing at something from long range based on detected emissions and then utilizing the radar on the missile + two-way datalink to verify target type and whatnot is a good way to prevent your own detection.

Explain more? I think I misunderstood you

Modern missiles could use anti radiation features as well as the two way datalink to guide themselves within close proximity of the emissions source. Use of the two way datalink can also prevent fratricide and other issues by painting a picture of what it is you’re attacking via the missiles onboard radar rather than the aircraft.

Just a thought.

i mean irst wont matter too much imo

Did you read what I wrote on why IRST would matter, or did you just skip through it?

if you say this then you don’t know what it is

I wasn’t aware they had anti-radiation features. I know they have home-on jam but wasn’t aware about anti-radiation features. But to properly launch the missiles and obtain the target’s distance, I would suppose you’re still forced to either use some sensor to determine range.

As you already mentioned IRST systems provide this though either through kinematic ranging or via laser rangefinder.

Which is why I think IRST will be FAR from redundant even if its value is only truly appreciated once stealth is implemented fully.

I didn’t say they did, only that it is possible. Future missiles will use multiple seeker types and some are already rumored to.

Thats not exactly groundbreaking at this point. Heavily limiting radar emissions is already something pilots actively do nowadays, and slaving/firing missiles off RWR warnings or MAWS sensors is also something thats long been a capability. IIRC the initial over the shoulder shots with the IRIS-T on the Eurofighters were specifically done via RWR slaving.

Anyone saying LWR and IRST isn’t really needed is insane. Passive detection or information gathering is a massive boon for any vehicles, and has been a significant disadvantage for western vehicles, air and ground, for quite a while.

When would be early enough? 7.5km (thats easily 10 to 15 seconds depending how long the missile has travelled) should be enough time to turn into a tail chase and flare at 500ish meters, or counter launch an IRIS-T if available.

LRF does not give launch warnings, only that you are tracked by a laser, so basing defensive manouvers just on that seems like a great way to waste all your energy

Yup. I think some people won’t be able to grasp how important those things will be until they come into the game and they see it with their own eyes. Having situational awareness while denying others their situational awareness is always the goal in anything militarily.
