Esmeraldas CM11
In the mid-70s, the Italian company Fincantieri designed a Class of Corvettes called “Type 550” (the name is given by their minimum displacement) the project included three basic versions: standard, multi-role and fast attack. These corvettes intended for export, built and designed by the Italian shipbuilding industry had a notable success, due to their versatility, in fact the customer could choose both the engine and the armament. The main buyers of these Units were Libya, Ecuador, (Iraq) and Malaysia. Ecuador was the second buyer (after Libya) of these Units, between 1982 and 1984 six of these Corvettes called “Esmeraldas Class” were purchased (Esmeraldas CM11, Manabì CM12, Los Rìos CM13, El Oro CM14, Los Galàpagos CM15, Loja CM16). The “Esmeraldas Class” units have seen an increase in displacement to 700 tons due to the fact that they carry more armaments and can embark a light helicopter on a dedicated deck. The lead ship “Esmeraldas CM11” was the first to enter service on 7 August 1982, like all this type of Corvette, the propulsion system is composed of four MTU 20V956 TB92 diesel engines and three 750 kw diesel electric generators, its maximum speed is 36 knots (66 km/h). The armament consists of an OtoMelara 76/62mm Compact gun, installed on the foredeck, on the stern deck is installed a twin OtoBreda 40/70mm DARDO gun. Amidships are installed two triple launchers for MM 40 Exocet SSM anti-ship missiles, for a total of six missiles, in an elevated position is installed a four-cell Albatros launcher for Aspide SAM missiles, and two triple launchers ILAS-3 ASW TT (installed one on each side of the main deck) for 324mm torpedoes. The electronic systems consist of a DECCA TM1226 navigation RADAR, a RAN-10S Pluto surface and air surveillance RADAR, a TSM 2630 Diodon active search and attack sonar mounted on the hull. The fire control system is based on a RTN-20X (Orion 20X) Dardo RADAR. The electronic warfare suite is composed of a Newton Gamma ECM (ELT 318/521), a Breda SCLAR - 105mm decoy launcher is also installed. All of the “Esmeraldas Class” corvettes are still in service with the Ecuadorian Navy to this day.
