Engesa EE-3 Jararaca
The vehicle’s history:
The commercial success of the EE-9 “Cascavel” and EE-11 “Urutu” armored vehicles allowed the Engesa company to vigorously penetrate the international market, realizing a long series of exports. This success led its engineers to design new vehicles that would expand and complement the list offered by the company. One of these vehicles was a small, compact, and agile reconnaissance armored vehicle, designated EE-3 and, in Engesa’s standards, also named after a Brazilian venomous snake (Jararaca).
The “Jararaca” has interesting characteristics that distinguish it from other armored vehicles in its class. Its silhouette is low (only 1.28 m) and its sloping armor stops infantry projectiles and shrapnel. The engine is a national Mercedes Benz (diesel) of 102 HP whose traction is exerted on all four wheels with bulletproof tires. This allows it to reach a speed of 110 km/h on the road.
The vehicle measures 3.9 m in length and 2 m in width and weighs about 5 tons when loaded. The standard armament includes a .50 caliber machine gun (12.7 mm), but it can also be equipped with anti-tank missiles or 7.62 mm caliber machine guns. Its range exceeds 700 kilometers

Its mechanical components were all from the national automotive industry, used in trucks, which facilitated the logistics of spare parts.
Its engine was a Mercedes Benz OM-314A, four-cylinder in-line, turbocharged, and its gearbox was a Clark model 240V, mechanical, with an Engesa downshift box, with helical gears, constant mesh, and a 1.0:1 ratio. Its clutch was a dry single-disc type, hydraulic, and the Engesa multiple transmission box was mechanical, with two speeds and constant mesh.
The steering system was ZF do Brasil model 8058, hydraulic, and its suspension was a rigid floating axle type, with semi-elliptic springs and double-action shock absorbers, with Bendix drum brakes and air-over-hydraulic activation and a mechanical parking brake.

The EE-3 Jararaca comes equipped with a standard armament package that includes a .50 caliber (12.7 mm) heavy machine gun, operated by the vehicle commander. Additionally, it can be fitted with a coaxial 7.62 mm machine gun, typically operated by the vehicle gunner.
For enhanced anti-armor capabilities, the EE-3 Jararaca can be outfitted with a guided antitank missile launch system, often utilizing Milan missiles. These missiles can be transported and launched from a platform mounted on the vehicle’s roof.
