EE-9 Cascavel Magro 37mm (Skinny Rattlesnake)

image

Introduction

The EE-9 Cascavel with a 37 mm cannon is an initial version of the armored reconnaissance vehicle developed in Brazil by Engesa, based on the experience acquired by the Brazilian Army with the use of the M8 Greyhound, a 6x6 armored vehicle from World War II. The development of the Cascavel aimed to create a national vehicle capable of meeting the operational needs of the Army, reducing dependence on imports and adapting to the specific conditions of Brazilian terrain and climate.

The variant equipped with a 37 mm cannon was one of the first models produced, primarily intended for reconnaissance and light fire support. This version used the M6 37 mm cannon, a weapon already considered obsolete for combat against more modern armored vehicles, but still useful against light targets and in patrol missions. The 37 mm EE-9 Cascavel marked the beginning of a series of evolutions that would lead to the development of more advanced versions of the armored vehicle, equipped with larger caliber cannons, such as the 90 mm, which became the standard for this type of vehicle in the Brazilian Armed Forces.

The nickname “Cascavel Magro” (“Skinny Cascavel”) was given to one of the early versions of the EE-9 Cascavel, equipped with a 37 mm cannon. The term “magro” (skinny) refers to its relatively light weight and less robust profile compared to later versions that were fitted with larger caliber cannons, like the 90 mm, and had significant improvements in armor and armament. The “Cascavel Magro” maintained a lighter configuration to favor mobility and reconnaissance functions but had limited combat capabilities.
