Dunkerque discussion

you guys might know more about “project” french battle ships and where they got to before cancellation but did the Alsace - class battleship did they ever leave the drawing board

Unfortunately no, it didn’t. The dockyards weren’t ready for it anyway and other ships like Clemenceau and the Joffre carriers were still going on so construction should have begun in 1941. And most of the documents were destroyed following the invasion. However, a few years ago, precious archives were found that would give a clearer idea of which kind of ship they were going for. Still, in theory, not enough for the ship to be accepted as per current rules. Never say never, though.

This is an official presentation of the Potsdam archives (not the actual archive) from 2018, which gave a few preliminary blueprints and mail concerning the Alsace. And that’s all there is to it. I haven’t seen the archives myself, but from French forum, I found 2 conflicting infos :

The first said that there was no final choice on what kind of ship it was going to be. Darlan wanted it started ASAP so it could have been a 3x4 380mm configuration. Another states that the 3 x 4 would have been too big, so they leaned toward the 3x3 380mm configuration. In the end though, it doesn’t really matter. Once again, the ship was never built so we’ll never really know.

And same goes for Gascogne… I don’t know why people think the Gascogne would be accepted, but as the rule stand right now, it’s a paper ship as well, it was never built. The only unfinished 1940 warships that could possibly be valid are battleship Clemenceau, a Richelieu sistership with a different secondary turret position, the 1939 De Grasse cruiser project, and the Fier class light destroyers (and many submarines but that’s another story).

I’m going to look on the bright side and see this as an opportunity to bring more players to naval for the event. At least the naval events are pretty easy to grind. You can usually complete each stage in 10 - 12 matches.

Ah yeah I meant Clemenceau when I wrote Gascogne. I knew one was laid down but I forgot which.

True. Naval battles will be packed.

I have a feeling Richelieu won’t arrive in the next update.

Oh yeah I don’t think Richelieu is necessarily coming in the next update. But sometime this year for sure.

Well Strasbourg is coming with the blast bags that were originally baked onto Dunkerque’s turret texture.

Might be unlikely but I’m hoping Dunkerque could get her blast bags too on her turrets.

I am very glad that they are giving it to us at the time of 1942. Where he has his own radar)
And I hope it won’t be broken like its sistership.
I wish they’d give it a normal shell, not what it has now.

I mean… I have never seen any photo of the Dunkerque with blast bags myself so it doesn’t surprise me that much but…

If that make them repaire the shell im happy

Yeah. I wish they wouldn’t put it behind a grindy event (or a paywall), the day before the biggest game release of this year so far.

I’ve only seen a few pictures where it’s there, the most well known one probably being the picture that shows damage up close from Mers-el-Kébir.

Oh, indeed, good eye. I retract my statement, it would be a nice addition.

I’d considered doing a report about Tennessee missing hers, do you know if they’re open to adding them to ships without them modeled? I assume they based the model mostly off pictures from the spring ‘43 trials in Puget Sound, where they were not yet present, however pictures show her with them by that summer when she participated in the Aleutian campaign so I think it would more accurately reflect the in service condition.

I think it depends entirely if Gaijin is willing to contact the studio they outsourced the model from to make such corrections. I’m not sure if there’s been a case where it was added upon request on the basis of a particular configuration, but I don’t see any harm in suggesting it.

Thanks, might give it a try then. On the cosmetic side I’m hoping this major they action the camo applying to deck report they accepted on her, and of course I’d love if they finally did something about the reload.

On the bright side, Strasbourg having her blast bags does mean it’s significantly easier for even a newbie 3D artist to add them to Dunkerque.

Even the most basic of 3D modeling programs have copy paste functions for geometry and rigging.

Well the leak list was true unfortunately. The best bb for France will be locked behind the pay wall. Also they don’t have many options left. Not a good decision.
Squadron vehicle would’ve been better.

But there will be a good reason for them to look at your AP shell report. So hopefully we’ll get something positive out of it 🤞

So for the tome being, the best french BB, with a bit more armor than dunkerque, is behind a paywall

great

They better not do the same thing with the Richelieu/ Jean Bart duo. Early versions as premiums, late ones in the tree, that’s how it should be
