Currently, F-4s ranging from F-4B to F-4J were capable of putting their radar into a BST mode, giving their sparrows an aspect gate and firing the sparrows to attack low aspect targets.
It’s currently an accepted suggestion
but this would allow even NON-PD Phantoms to be able to use their sparrows in a limited look down scenario.

but this would help aircraft like the F-4C and E.
Of course, there is the detriment that you can’t specifically “target” an aircraft, relying on the doppler shift that the seekerhead sees to go after him, and you’re relying on the sparrows doppler seeker head to actually be tracking the target.
