After India gained independence, the government had problems funding the country’s armed forces. On December 7th 1949, Flag Day was first celebrated! Small flags were distributed to the population in exchange for donations. The holiday has been held annually since then, on this day the armed forces parade, veterans are honored and funds are raised to support the military.
