Dev Server “Tusk Force”, Fix the Swedish Lvkv m/42 & VEAK 40 Ammo velocity, 850~ m/s → 1005~ m/s

Hi gang, I’m just going to jump into it.
The current “Tusk Force” dev server is the perfect chance to finally fix one of the longest-standing issues with the Swedish SPAAGs, the Lvkv m/42 and the VEAK 40. Both of these vehicles mount the 40 mm lvakan m/48, better known as the Bofors L/70, but in-game they are still firing the wrong ammunition. Instead of the proper L/70 rounds, they currently use shells from the older Bofors L/60 gun. This mistake leaves them with a muzzle velocity of only 850 m/s, which is far too slow for the guns they actually had and makes them underperform badly against jets and fast aircraft at their BR.

The first piece of evidence comes directly from the 1960 Army Ammunition Register. On pages 43–44, the register clearly lists the dedicated shells for the lvakan m/48: the slsgr m/483 and slsgr m/484 HE-T rounds. These were entirely different from the old L/60 shells, both in casing and projectile weight, and they were fired at around 986–1000 m/s. This is hard proof that the L/70 had its own faster ammunition, not the slower rounds currently modeled in-game.

The same fact is supported by Bofors VEAK 40 this litterature written on this vehicle by Rickard O. Lindström the magazine Pansar nummer 4 released 2011 describes it using the correct high-velocity ammunition, confirming that it was always intended to work with the proper 1000 m/s rounds. This aligns with its role as a radar-guided SPAAG designed to intercept jets, something it cannot do effectively with the current underperforming ammo.

It also shows that the VEAK 40 has access to APDS (Armor-piercing Discarding sabot) that has been noted to achieve 120mm of pen at flat-face armour at 100m.

Finally, the technical manual for the Lvkv m/42 gives perhaps the clearest confirmation. In black and white, it states that the muzzle velocity of its 40 mm lvakan m/48 gun is 1000 m/s. This completely settles the question and shows that the shells currently used in-game are simply the wrong ones. The Lvkv m/42 should be performing just like its contemporaries, such as the Ostwind or the AMX-13 DCA 40, which uses the exact same gun and already has the correct high-velocity shells.

(technical description has long since been de-classified)

Correcting this issue would not just restore historical accuracy; it would also massively improve gameplay balance. The Lvkv m/42 would finally be competitive at its tier, and the VEAK 40 would become a true 7.7 SPAAG, capable of dealing with jets as intended.

With “Tusk Force” still in development on the dev server, this is the ideal moment to make the fix before it reaches live. Simply replacing the incorrect L/60 ammunition with the correct L/70 shells would be a small change, but it would make a huge difference for the performance of these vehicles.

It’s also worth clarifying one final point, since I know some players might immediately bring it up: no, this isn’t a call to give the VEAK 40 its APDS rounds. Yes, Sweden did have a 40 mm APDS round on paper with around 120 mm of penetration, but adding that to the VEAK 40 would completely undermine the entire reason it was shifted down to 7.7 BR. That move happened because it lost the unrealistic HE-VT round it was never actually issued in service or during testing. Giving it APDS on top of its proper high-velocity HE shells would swing the balance too far the other way and effectively erase the compromise that makes it work at 7.7.

The VEAK 40 was built and fielded as an anti-aircraft system first and foremost, not a tank destroyer. Its historical loadouts reflect this, relying on fast-firing, high-velocity HE shells to take down aircraft, while still having access to basic AP rounds for light armor if needed. This is exactly the way it should stay in-game. Correcting its HE ammunition to the proper L/70 shells gives it the performance it should always have had, without introducing ahistorical or unbalanced elements.

So please, calm down. the request here isn’t about overbuffing the VEAK 40 or making it some kind of monster. It’s simply about fixing a long-standing mistake by removing the L/60 shells it never fired and giving it the historically accurate 1000 m/s HE-T rounds it was designed to use. That way, both the Lvkv m/42 and the VEAK 40 can finally perform the way they were meant to, sitting in the right BR bracket, competitive but not overpowered, and historically correct.

I totally need this, veak 40 is pretty much offmeta 7.7 with apds it would stand in 8.0 as well

+1

Also, the APDS might not be as big of a stretch as one would assume. The VEAK 40’s current AP rounds already have 90mm pen at 100m. The APDS with 120mm pen at 100m would yield a 30% increase in pen, but presumably less spall.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the Flakpanzer 341’s gun/ammo got fixed – it’s great to see that level of attention to detail. But I really have to question the logic of why that report got priority over the Lvakan m/48 issue. The Flakpanzer 341 isn’t even available to anyone anymore and it’s just one vehicle. Meanwhile, the Lvakan m/48 problem affects multiple vehicles that are actually in the tree. The VEAK 40 in particular isn’t even regularly used right now because its current ammo is horrid against jets… which is exactly the role it was built for.

That said, maybe this is actually a good sign. Since Gaijin is now dabbling with correcting SPAA ammo, hopefully the Lvakan m/48 will be next in line! it really deserves the same level of attention. Holding my thumbs they keep the momentum going!

can we also get the VT shells back?

Not unless we can get solid proof that the VEAK 40 fired it, and that has already so far been de-bunked/not been able to be proved.

I think it’s funny how Gaijin is spending dev resources fixing vehicles that, as far as they’re concerned, have been removed from the game.

The whole bug reporting system and how they are prioritized is so perplexing to me

Well done, thank you for this.

Here is to hoping its gets patched in the 2nd Dev-Server or even upon update release!
