Dassault Rafale - Variants, Characteristics, Armament and Performance

the only thing the EFT has over the Rafale is engine power and weight but that is fair as the rafale is meant for naval so will be heavier

Flight performance of the two is hard to judge but they are both very good

There is a non naval versin of the Rafale

Firstly, I was hoping the light hearted banter wouldn’t devolve into this.

That said, I would just mention that from the only trial where we actually see which aircraft does what ‘better’, (the Swiss one), the Eurofighter sent by EADS was faulty.

That said, older tranche Typhoons could be said to be marginally dissapointing as a package, but then again so were older tranche Rafale’s, however the Rafale was a more mature platform and at the time, was probably the better buy.

The Eurofighter can also use bigger radars than the Rafale, and also has a bigger missile count by doctrine. Rafale is playing catch up in regards to missile count.

While the Swiss evaluations was in 2008, they did also evaluate the 2016 variants. Eurofighter consortium and Dassault had sent in what the specifications would be in 2016. Eurofighter was still using a mechanical radar for the 2016 variant iirc, while Rafale was evaluated with AESA radar.

Thats for sure not everything is shown

Did we get a conclusion on that, I’ve only seen the 2006 evaluation.

Yeah, that’s the biggest downside at that time. The Captor M and RBE2 seem to be roughly different but on par according to what i’ve seen.

However M-Scan vs AESA is just not even a competition though the M-Scan has better limits.

It will be interesting to see if ECRS MK.2 grows along with the RBE2-XG(i think thats the acronym), perhaps as a risk reduction measure for Tempest as that is supposedly due within the next 10-11 years.

Demonstrated means these tell us nothing of the aircrafts true performance

And under investigation for corruption

Because this is the only documents available publicly, if you have something else i’ll be glad to learn about it

I know the EF strength which are more power, better top speed, better manoeuvrability at high altitude, which make sens because it was build mostly as an interceptor

Mytho says is the Indian one so I apologise.

You can see here that Gripen and Rafale was considered with AESA radar in 2015 configurations, but Eurofighter was not. Even without AESA though, Eurofighter still came ahead of Gripen with AESA funny enough

FYI those demonstrated figures for the EFT are much lower than the documents @Flame2512 sourced from our National Archives, I wouldn’t put any stock in those. And if thats the real sustained number for Rafale then RIP, Typhoon does much better haha.

Yeah, both Indian and French authorities are allegedly investigating corruption in the deal. Although, its painted by some as political nonsense in India. I’d still look forward to the evaluations of MMRCA and the recent Rafale M vs Super Hornet evaluations.

Cheers, not surprised on the radar though the gripen is quite small it exacerbates the downside the rafale has with its RBE2 compared to the EF but makes it even more of an issue.

That coupled with Eurofighter investing tonnes into making it an M-Scan that can rival PESA makes it not very optimistic for Gripen.
