Dassault Rafale - Variants, Characteristics, Armament and Performance - Part 2

I don’t even know if I look forward to the addition of next gen fox 3s like meteors if they keep butchering the missile guidance units like this, even if Rafale needs them the most for being the top tier with the shortest range

it does sound like the missiles are too unstable… :)

Might be a bit hyperbolic cause I still get 20km+ kills in the few games I’ve played. It’s still a big issue though.

Yeah they fly sideways now into the target, tokyo drifting across the air.

Clearly working as intended.

I think they went a bit hard on the “fin distance to center of mass” or whatever it was called

Either that or when they removed PID stuff from some missiles.

I think in this specific case, it would indicate detecting targets in motion. Reason for is that detection of stationnary ground based targets would generally be handled by some kind of SAR function, so the explicit term “detection mobile terrestre” would likely indicate detection of ground based targets in motion.

“Mobile” being a word with multiple different definitions (it can even be both an noun and an adjective in french, and in both ways, there are multiple definitions that can be used), you need to consider the context in which the word is used to identify which meaning is likely used.

“Detection mobile terrestre” is off the top of my head the most accurate translation of “Ground moving target indication” (GMTI)

It appears that the instantaneous movement of the target due to angle gating is causing this.

yeah the r-77s are also doing it

Unfortunately I don’t see a single report accepted regarding this issue.

i also think that it would be best to make seperate reports for each missile

since it might notbeven be the exact same issue for every affected missile

Well, this is very confusing then, because what exactly does the Rafale have to detect surface and ground threats that are either moving and/or fixed? This is regarding the RBE2 PESA radar which also does state it does not have SAR at the time of the magazine’s publication.

We also know that GMTI mode was not used until the F4 standard:

If its not SAR, then it must rely on just painting the ground, reading the return and looking for spikes, which might represent targets.
By that i mean, it gets a return of x distance, and then it finds y distance, followed by x again.

Yup, other sources seem to confirm the same thing. The Rafale maps the ground, detects and tracks targets, identifies them, and can designate weapons.

Not entirely sure, its possible/likely there are air to ground radar modes that predate GMTI and SAR. I know there are things like real beam ground mapping, doppler beam sharpening, etc… but im not too well versed on air to ground radar modes.

Could be just advertisement of unfinished features to attract foreign customers …

Not making much sense there when it’s specifically stating what features it currently has and what features is being developed.

Well, the limits of the technology are well known.

You just can’t detect vehicles in the ground clutter without doppler effect.
And it says SAR is in development, though honestly I doubt you could even do it with SAR given the technology of the era and computing power available at the time … Especially not for car/tank sized “vehicles”.

GMTI isn’t PD, MTI is an clutter filter algorithm adjacent but not equal to it. It could be using STI modes similar to what Sea modes might be using?

sea modes are using brute force to detect ships that are massive compared to a tank and the sea has way simpler ground clutter returns than normal terrain
