“This is a cheap car. It’s also basic, not especially exciting, definitely not glamorous and I can’t pretend it gives me the fizz. But it is in no way nasty. In fact, I think it might be a bit cool. ”

Introduction
The Dacia Duster, introduced in 2010, marked a significant milestone for Romanian automaker Dacia, a subsidiary of the French Renault since 1999. Initially focused on producing affordable cars like the Logan, Dacia shifted toward creating a rugged and economical compact SUV to meet the growing demand for versatile off-road vehicles. Debuting at the Geneva Motor Show, the Duster combined practicality with affordability, achieving a frankly unexpected level of success across Europe and other markets. While it lacked luxurious features, its robust build and off-road capabilities appealed to budget-conscious consumers, earning it a well-deserved reputation as a reliable and functional SUV.
The Romanian Army officially inducted a militarized version of the Dacia Duster, nicknamed “Commando,” into its fleet, in an attempt to modernize its light vehicle inventory. NATO complaint and air-liftable, the Duster Commando features basic reinforced protection. It includes provisions for mounting a remote-controlled weapon station (RWCS) operated from the passenger seat. Optionally, the wheels can be replaced with tracks manufactured by ACF Tracks, significantly improving off-road performance.
Developed collaboratively by Renault Technologie Roumanie, RomTurungia, and Uzina Mecanică București, the Duster Commando project evolved from prototypes first showcased in 2013 and refined through as shown at events such as the 2018 Black Sea Defense and Aerospace exhibition. Over 800 units have now been inducted into the Romanian military, with Dacia aiming to expand its presence in the global military vehicle market.
The variant discussed in this suggestion was unveiled during the 2014 ‘1st December’ Parade, mounting an ‘Anubis’ M2 Browning .50cal RCWS. Manufactured by Pro Optica, the Anubis is fully stabilised, with Thermal imaging and remote ammunition selection, fully operable from the passenger seat.
