CV90 CZr — Adapting the Platform (Part 2)

Hi and welcome to my 11th suggestion!
When the Czech army announced that they would replace their ageing fleet of BMP-2s, many defense companies tried to win the contract for supplying the replacement vehicle. BAE Land Systems Hägglund was one of them who debuted the CV90 CZ and the CV90 CZr at IDET 2017 in Brno, Czech Republic. The CV90 CZ has a manned E-series turret, while the CV90 CZr uses the Kongsberg MCT-30 RCT. Another difference between them is the chassis; both are technically CV90 Mk. IV chassis, but the exact chassis used for the CV90 CZr is the CV90 Mk. IV Armadillo. The Armadillo is an APC based on the CV90 chassis, and thus it has a slightly higher profile than a regular CV90 Mk. IV, but this was needed as all crewmembers will be seated inside the hull.

History:
The Czech Republic has for a long time used soviet origin equipment, with one of those vehicles being the BMP-2. When it was time to replace their ageing fleet of BMP-2s, multiple companies tried to win the contract, BAE Land Systems Hägglund being one of them. It was decided to work together with around 20 companies located in the Czech Republic, with one of these being VOP CZ, who specialise in electronics for the Czech military. BAE Land Systems Hägglund would stand for the construction of the CV90 CZ and CZr, while VOP CZ and the other firms would make sure to supply the vehicles with parts that would be compatible with other equipment already in use. This would ensure that the vehicles would be fully integrated with the Czech army.

Both the CV90 CZ and CZr would be unveiled at IDET 2017 held in Brno, Czech Republic. The CV90 CZ featured a CV90 Mk. IV adapted to be able to be integrated seamlessly with the Czech army, while the CV90 CZr was a bit more ambitious. It was built on a CV90 Mk. IV Armadillo, which is an APC variant of the CV90. This chassis was chosen as it offers a slightly higher profile of the chassis so the crew can all be located inside the hull, as this prototype featured the unmanned Kongsberg MCT-30 turret. But there was competition right away with an Ascod 2 presented as a solution as well, and both the KF31 and KF41 Lynx were offered as well. The CV90 CZ and CZr would subsequently face these vehicles in trials. Oddly, though the KF41 Lynx would not be present, a Puma was there seemingly in its place.

The CV90 would ultimately be chosen as the vehicle to replace the BMP-2 fleet, but the ASCOD would be revised before that to meet the requirements, and a few other CV90s were offered as well. It resulted in a bit of a scandal, but the CV90 Mk. IV was chosen in the end, and several different variants have been ordered. One of these has been named PBVP CV9030CZ, and the first vehicle has already been produced at Hägglund and unveiled; production has since then been moved to the Czech Republic, and a few vehicles are already being constructed.

Specifications

Armor:
As the chassis is a modified CV90 Mk. IV chassis, it has the same protection as a regular CV90 Mk. IV. The front armor will be a bit less effective, as the upper front plate has a smaller angle than the regular CV90 Mk. IV; there are also some flat spots close to the roof where there is a small superstructure upon which the turret is placed. These flat surfaces will be a weak spot on the front, but they are not that large. The sides and front lower plate have IBDs AMAP-B applique armor, which does improve the armor a bit. This does lack an Active Protection System, unlike the CV90 CZ, which gets the Iron Fist APS.

Crew:
The crew consists of three crewmembers, all of whom are seated inside the hull. The driver sits in the same place as any other CV90, but the commander sits behind him slightly higher up, and the gunner is a bit behind the commander to the right of him.

      • Zoom / Field of View: Continuous optical zoom on the daylight channel and multi-field-of-view settings on the thermal channel.
      • Target Identification Range: Designed to provide full-weather battlefield target recognition and identification matching modern infantry fighting vehicle requirements.
      • Laser Rangefinder: Present and integrated.
      • Stabilization: EVPÚ 2-axis gyro-stabilized pan-and-tilt positioner.
      • Traverse: Continuous 360° traverse.
  • Gunner

    • Integrated Gunner Sight
      • Sensors: Daylight Camera VIS95 and Thermal Camera.
      • Zoom / Field of View: Unknown.
      • Target Identification Range: Unknown.
      • Laser Rangefinder: Present and integrated.
      • Stabilization: 4-axis Detached Line of Sight (DLOS) gyro-stabilization.
      • Traverse: Continuous 360° turret traverse, with weapon elevation from -20° to +60°.
  • Driver

    • Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera of unknown type.

Armaments:
The Kongsberg MCT-30 houses a 30 mm Bushmaster 2 Mk.44 cannon with a co-axial 7.62 mm machine gun. There are also 8 smoke launchers on the turret, consisting of 4 sets with 2 pairs in each set.

Mobility:
The chassis on which the CV90 CZr is based upon, as stated earlier, a CV90 Armadillo. The first Armadillo was based on a Mk. III chassis, but it has since been upgraded to be based on the CV90 Mk. IV chassis. The Armadillo is lighter than the CV90 Mk. IV, as it comes in at around 26-27 tons, but that is without the small superstructure and turret. The chassis alone is probably close to 30 tons, and the Konsberg MCT-30 starts at a weight of 1,250 kg. The variant of the MCT-30 chosen to be mounted on this prototype is a heavier variant of the turret. I would estimate it is probably closer to 2 tons, but that is just a guess on my end. Either way, this would most likely be lighter than the CV90 CZ, which would mean better mobility compared to the CV90 CZ.
