Introduction:
Hello and welcome to my 10th suggestion, which is one of two CV90 prototypes made in 2017 for the Czech Republic. The CV90 CZ was put together by BAE Land Systems Hägglund in cooperation with VOP CZ and some other 20 Czech firms, who specialise in the Czech Army. Hägglunds stood for the construction of the vehicle, while VOP CZ and many other companies stood for the integration of the technical aspects of the vehicle, such as making sure the communication devices installed would be compatible with already in-use equipment of the Czech military and other similar stuff. The CV90 CZ would be presented at IDET 2017 in Brno, Czech Republic, together with the CV90 CZr, which I will cover in another suggestion. These two were marketed as two similar but still distinctly different vehicles. The main difference is the turret of choice: the CV90 CZ used the E-series turret, while the CV90 CZr used the Kungsberg MCT-30 RCT. Both of these would later face off against the KF31 Lynx, KF41 Lynx, Ascod 2, Puma, but also the box standard CV90 Mk. IV later down the line, for the replacement of the Czech Army’s ageing BMP-2 fleet.

History:
After the success of the Stridsfordon 90, the export market was logically the next step, and under the development of the Strf 90, multiple calibers were on the table. The 30 mm Bushmaster was one of the options, but it was not deemed to be sufficient for dealing with heavier targets that the Strf 90 could meet on the battlefield. Therefore, the 30 mm Bushmaster would instead be offered on the first export model, which was the CV90 Mk. I, also known as the CV9030N. This was just the start of the CV90’s export market, with many nations opting for the CV90 as their IFV of choice after this point. In 2017, it was time to try to get the Czech Republic to buying the CV90, and two different prototypes were developed to meet the requirements. The first prototype was the CV90CZ, based on the CV90 Mk. IV. The second prototype was the CV90 CZr, which is based on a modified CV90 Mk. IV chassis. These two would be shown off at IDET 2017 held in Brno, Czech Republic.

These two prototypes would later be used in a large-scale trial where they went up against the KF31 and KF41 Lynx, Ascod 2, and the Puma. The results of the trials were in favor of the CV90 being chosen, but other competitors would not give up just yet. The Ascod 2 would be revised and shown off again to the Czech military, but BAE Land Systems decided to up their game as well. They decided to show off the CV90 Mk. IV fitted with the D-series turret instead of the E-series, and this would be the nail in the coffin for the competitors. After this, the Czech army decided to try to come to an agreement on acquiring the CV90, but that story is for another suggestion, as there was a bit of a scandal that happened.

Specifications

Armor:
Armor of the CV90 CZ is the same as the CV90 Mk. IV, as it is based on the Mk. IV chassis. But unlike the Mk. IV, the CV90 CZ gets the Iron Fist active protection system (APS), which consists of two launchers, one on each rear corner of the turret’s roof. Both the CV90 CZ and Mk. IV also use IBD’s AMAP-B on the front and on the sides, which does increase the armor of the vehicle.

Crew:
The crew count of the CV90 CZ is the same as many other CV90s, which consist of 3 crew members, with them having the following positions and equipment:

  • Commander

    • Denel Vehicle Systems and Thales Optronique’s Above Armour Panoramic Gunnery Sight (AAGPS)
      • Sensors: Thales KATE-LR long-range cooled thermal imager and a high-definition daylight color TV camera.
      • Zoom / Field of View: Continuous zoom from 22.5° to 1.25°.
      • Target Identification Range: Up to 4,000 meters (day) and 3,100 meters (thermal/night).
      • Laser Rangefinder: Effective out to 15,000 meters.
      • Stabilization: Denel 2-axis motorized stabilization gimbal.
      • Traverse: Continuous 360° traverse.

  • Gunner

    • SAAB Universal Tank and Anti-Aircraft Fire Control System (UTAAS)
      • Sensors: Standard daylight TV camera, 3rd generation thermal imaging camera (operating in the 8–12 μm or 3–5 μm bands).
      • Zoom / Field of View: Fixed daylight channel provides an 8° Field of View with 8x magnification.
      • Laser Rangefinder: Effective up to and beyond 10,000 meters.
      • Stabilization: 2-axis gyro-stabilized mirror top-module, providing elevation coverage from -10° to +45° and azimuth deflection of ±18°.

  • Driver

    • Forward-Looking Infrared (FLIR) camera of unknown type.

Armaments:
The main armament of the CV90 CZ consists of the 30 mm Bushmaster 2 Mk. 44 automatic cannon, the same as on the standard CV90 Mk. IV. It also gets a launcher with two ready-to-launch (RTL) Spike-LR II ATGMs, a 7.62 FN MAG machinegun in an independent mount on the left side of the turret, as well as 12 smoke launchers, 6 launchers on each side.

Mobility:
The mobility of the CV90 CZ should be expected to be the same as the CV90 Mk. IV, as they are very similar vehicles, with the only difference being some equipment, such as the addition of an APS and a different independent commander sight.
