After about a year of trying back and forth and up and down I’ve finally given up and gone here.
What weaknesses does the J-7D have? As far as it looks for me its a straight upgrade to the MiG-21bis at a lower BR.
Essentially:
It’s faster than a Starfighter, it has a reasonable gun, it can challenge even the F-5 in a two-circle, and it gets 4 Magic 1s (or 4 rear aspect AIM-9Ls) at the insane BR of 10.7.
Is there any sort of consistent way to counter it?
It’s slower than a Mig-21bis (worse engine), it has no all aspect AAMs, and the engine overheats on afterburner if it’s left on max for too long.
Treat it like any other Mig-21. It’s a delta wing aircraft with poor energy retention, and average acceleration. Get it to turn, get it slow, and you should be able to do something to it.

Sorry bud but this is pretty “skill issue” as it comes. Sounds like you have a problem with them getting the jump on you, not that its flight model is OP. Memorize your strengths (like f5c has amazing energy retention and turn rate if kept above 0.9 M) and it’s weaknesses (Delta wing so bleeds energy if too much AOA, tricky gun placement with anemic round count)
while you can beat a F5C in a turn fight if he uses more then 2 brain cells and energy fights you loose so its advised to avoid them unless absolutely necessary J7D PL5B is deadly but not absurdly crazy a bit strong for 10.7 honestly mig 21 Bis should probably be 10.7 to but ey its fine what we really need is decomp right now due to the bad compression model

I’ve mainly had issues countering it in the F-104G (which somehow is 11.0, yet is worse than it in every single way hence I ask for exploitable weaknesses) until I finally got the opportunity to retire the tent plug here the other day.
The F-4F counters it a lot better as far as I’ve experienced, same goes with all three American phantoms, the Crusader, and even the Hunter F.6. So essentially anything that can maintain an AoA that doesn’t round to 0.
I was averaging about 13k rp per game in the J7D last friday when i earned the j10c after a few hours (maybe less). Its a fantastic prem right now, perhaps best in game where its at.
