Conqueror & Caernarvon - Technical Data & Discussion

A discussion area for the Conqueror, the final heavy tank in British service and its immediate precursor Caernarvon. While differing in turret and armament, both vehicles share the same hull.

Precursor to the Chieftain, the TANK, HY GUN, CONQUEROR, Mks 1 & 2 were the heaviest and heaviest-armed vehicles in the British Army’s inventory, barring certain experimental platforms. Built in response to the Soviet IS-3, Conqueror was intended to provide decisive long-range fire support to the medium Centurions and lighter Charioteers.

Incorporating technological innovations such as a massive armament and centralised turret, independent commander’s station, and electro-hydraulic power traverse, Conqueror’s continuing influence can be seen in the Chieftain and Challenger main battle tanks.
