In 1978, Afghanistan underwent a violent radical regime change putting a communist party, the PDPA , into power comprised of 2 main factions, the radical left wing Khalqs & the moderate left-wing Parchams, both competing for power.
The Khalqs were in charge of the country for the next 2 years till they were purged by their Parcham rival with the help of the Soviet Union given their incompetent leadership enraging its mostly conservative-leaned population, which it retaliated with insurgencies across the country setting off the start of the Afghan-Soviet War.
To keep its communist Afghan ally afloat, the Soviets poured into huge quantities of military equipment among them some outdated tanks like the iconic T-34-85, but also more modern ones like the PT-76s, T-55, T-62, BMP-1 & -2s.
The bright red Khalq emblem serving as the Army roundel was replaced by the emblem of the Parchams till it underwent an roundel change in 1987.
