History.
The 4th Tank Battalion M was born unofficially in 1939 (officially the battalion was born in 1927) when the battalion was assigned the first M13/40 tanks. Prepared in 1940 to be sent to Libya, it was instead sent to Albania to take part in the fighting against Greek forces. There the battalion passed to the tactical dependencies of the 31st Tank Infantry Regiment and took part in several engagements against enemy units, and despite the inauspicious terrain the tankers gave their best. During a period of rest, the company commander was portrayed in a photograph on top of his vehicle (a brand new M14/41 tank) license plate “RE 3534,” and the photograph clearly shows the company crest based on a French-style playing card.
Later (at an unknown time that some assume predates the first photo) the vehicle is portrayed in some photographs after being severely damaged by an anti-tank mine explosion in Albania.
It is uncertain whether the vehicle is the same in all three photos since in the photos taken after the mine blast, the vehicle’s license plate is not present.
The coats of arms.
The coat of arms is a French playing card of number 7 of the suit of diamonds. The original coloring of the coat of arms is not known, but it probably follows the original coloring of the card i.e. red color.
