Okay but incredibly important question for those of us that play Air AB - can it still damage bases?
Sure, a few map/game mode combinations have a ton of things that cluster bombs would have a ton of targets to mop up in a pass. Others - depending on how effective they’ll be vs pillboxes, have a moderate amount - but still run to a point of ‘well time to hit bases’. As well as others where wiping out the bases is more a thing due to relatively limited ground targets - especially when 5+ players take strike/bomber aircraft to go hit them and 4 fighters decide they’d rather attack ground targets from the start than cover the planes better equipped to do that.
But if this thing has targets it can’t take out, or your in a position you kinda need to bomb the bases to run points down faster, and these can’t damage bases at all - your now running around with a useless weapon weighing you down.
And this is a problem in Arcade mode at least, on the air and ground sides - things added that make a vehicle seem more useful and powerful but practically useless outside super specific scenarios. You added ARM’s - great, there’s maybe 2 or 3 Air AB maps that have like 6-8 targets that they’ll work on assuming you know the band and have a missile that tracks it. You added ASM’s - Midway is the only map where they are really useful given there’s about 20 actual ships, 8 DD’s and like a dozen Cargo Ships - what few other maps even have naval targets it’s maybe 3-4. Incendiary’s are great vs bases, you can take out some of the MG’s and AA with them, but once it’s pillboxes, tanks, and even some of the other vehicles - you got deadweight again. And if any of this is impacting BR - it kinda becomes a problem when say an anti-ship missile you have no actual use for 95% of the time is adding .3-1.0 in your BR when the rest of what the plane has doesn’t fit it.
With all these new weapons - the Air Arcade maps need overhauls. Not just to look pretty - but to actual reflect how the game has changed since I started playing back when we had 4 nations, can’t remember if Japan had been added or was still just like 5 planes to technically be number 5. The current setups for most still work for the actual 1.0-about 6.0-7.0 aircraft (outside of weird advanced jets in low BR’s and the like) but once you start getting to about 8.0, and absolutely to 9.0+ there needs to start being era changes where even if it is Normandy it’s got say more vehicles and positions, more ships, maybe some AA vehicles stationed with radars so that people actually have a use for ARM’s, ASM’s, and Cluster Bombs. Maybe starting putting ‘bases’ like what you have in Nuclear Escalation as additional ground targets to destroy where you have a group of ground targets to get pounded by ARM’s and various other ordnance to take out besides the standard bases (which would also be great even in lower BR’s to make the maps feel a little more alive and like battlefields). Get to 11.0+ maybe you stick with gun-based AA’s (because missile-based may make it too crazy like NE can get) but now battlefields are full of them and need to be taken out with ARM’s or conventional weapons, if one side comes from the sea while other has land only the sea side has ships that take some of the AA count for ASM’s to be used by the other team. Cluster bombs to wreck any ground targets especially those grouped at bases, incendiaries for anything light and standard bases/airfield.
I don’t want cluster bombs bombs to be yet another new tool for my planes, that I never get to use because it’s just better and more practical to bring standard dumb bombs, or AGM-65’s, or what planes I have with GNSS bombs that are a bit clunky to use because their useful against everything, or almost everything, on every map no matter what and not ‘great, I took out all 6 radar AA’s I just need to keep dumping these ARMs that got no use now’. Which is also where it’d be great if we could land on an airfield, hit caps lock, and use that to swap out our loadouts or even just bring up something to select another one.
They are usable in custom ground battles; I will update when I manage to get a ground match.
EDIT: You can spawn and drop them in ground battles, but they don’t actually explode, even though they make the sound.
They never said it would be air battles only, just that it is their primary game mode.
They said that these won’t be available in standard Ground Battles and that they will be unique to Air Battles
Their primary use would be in NE
They should have included this in the initial post then, since not everyone is on the forums for every post, and it is stupid that they can’t be used in ground battles IMO.
The thread title is: “Cluster Bombs in Air Battles!”.
The first line is: “Hey everyone! That’s right, cluster bombs are coming to War Thunder Air Battles!”
From reading that I would just assume that these bombs are only for air battles.
It really isn’t stupid at all lol
From reading that, one would assume they are usable in air battles, not that they are ONLY usable in air battles.
That is your opinion; like I said, that was mine.
Maybe…
The flip side is that to use them well, you would need to make yourself quite vulnerable to get a good release. I think we’d really need to test it first. Maybe they could do a test event at some point.
But I think the main reason is that they probably wouldnt come to lower BR aircraft, the ones that would benefit the most from them in ARB/NE and the higher BR ones probably would be running something guided anyway.
So gamemode restricting them just allows them to come to everything without much issue. Its about time they came up with a way that allows aircraft to be at full strength without fretting about tanks in another gamemode and opens the door for a LOT of other weapons previously denied. Not just new ones either, but if this can be done more precisely, we could see existing weapons denied from lower BR aircraft, added to them and gamemode restricted.
You know what the average GRB map looks like, right?
Ah, thanks
T90 turret on Leo Hull when?
What’s that got to do with CBU’s?
Asking the real questions…
Skyshark?

prob falls under “sonic weapon” category
From what I have tested, the cluster bombs is currently an invisible standard bomb, that when it hits the ground and explodes, it then has a radius where it do small explosions to simulate the cluster ammunition. This is why that they only explodes in a circle and not a more oval pattern, and there is no difference in the radius of the cluster pattern depending on speed and altitude.
Impact pattern of BL755 to show what patter should look like
While the drop when going 700km/h looks to be more oval, i think it might be the camera angle that is maybe changing it visually.
