Cluster Bombs in Air Battles!

They are usable in custom ground battles; I will update when I manage to get a ground match.

EDIT: You can spawn and drop them in ground battles, but they don’t actually explode, even though they make the sound.

They never said it would be air battles only, just that it is their primary game mode.

They said that these won’t be available in standard Ground Battles and that they will be unique to Air Battles

Their primary use would be in NE

They should have included this in the initial post then, since not everyone is on the forums for every post, and it is stupid that they can’t be used in ground battles IMO.

The thread title is: “Cluster Bombs in Air Battles!”.
The first line is: “Hey everyone! That’s right, cluster bombs are coming to War Thunder Air Battles!”

From reading that I would just assume that these bombs are only for air battles.

It really isn’t stupid at all lol

From reading that, one would assume they are usable in air battles, not that they are ONLY usable in air battles.

That is your opinion; like I said, that was mine.

Maybe…

The flip side is that to use them well, you would need to make yourself quite vulnerable to get a good release. I think we’d really need to test it first. Maybe they could do a test event at some point.

But I think the main reason is that they probably wouldnt come to lower BR aircraft, the ones that would benefit the most from them in ARB/NE and the higher BR ones probably would be running something guided anyway.

So gamemode restricting them just allows them to come to everything without much issue. Its about time they came up with a way that allows aircraft to be at full strength without fretting about tanks in another gamemode and opens the door for a LOT of other weapons previously denied. Not just new ones either, but if this can be done more precisely, we could see existing weapons denied from lower BR aircraft, added to them and gamemode restricted.

You know what the average GRB map looks like, right?

Soviet Union WW2 clusterbombs when?

From what I have tested, the cluster bombs is currently an invisible standard bomb, that when it hits the ground and explodes, it then has a radius where it do small explosions to simulate the cluster ammunition. This is why that they only explodes in a circle and not a more oval pattern, and there is no difference in the radius of the cluster pattern depending on speed and altitude.

Impact pattern of BL755 to show what patter should look like
Impact pattern dropped from ~1000m

Impact pattern dropped from ~5000m

Impact pattern dropped from ~150m going ~300km/h

Impact pattern dropped from ~150m going ~700km/h

While the drop when going 700km/h looks to be more oval, i think it might be the camera angle that is maybe changing it visually.

The most useless version possible meawhile NATO keeps frying all the SAMs in NE using stealth weapons while having twice as much blue side sams and nerfing the kh31 to the ground with magical all knowing radar operators.

NE is just unplayable on the redfor side at 11.3+ and it’s the only place where the rbk would be even slightly useful.

Thats a shame they didnt model them with any effort, where release conditions mattered

In GRB, with the AA already in the game, such weapons are an absolute non issue lmao, and even at lower BR, they are an order of magnitude less effective than even early ARMs.

Maybe more advanced sensor fused submunitions would be more problematic, but even there, i fail to see what’s so scary about clusters respect to kh31, spices, agm179, lmur etc etc, considering that most of those submunitions would probabl yfail at destroying a MBT in WT even in the more advanced iterations.

At lower BR agm65/agm45 equipped airplanes basically run uncontrsted already so even there even very advanced cluster dispensers would just be a novelty more than a gamebreaking addition.

Maybe stealth MITL cruise missles should be added only to NT so the bluefor oppression can be countered with a good dose of Kh59Mk2 without completely breaking GRB, but even then just not adding RCS mechanics in GRB would be enough (wich already happens with spoce/gbu39 wich have reduced rcs in NE but not in GRB).
