Churchill NA75 Turret Face Thickness

Hello all,

I was reading through my copy of “Haynes Churchill Tank 1941 - 1956 Owner’s Workshop Manual” and noticed this little detail in the specifications of the Churchill Mk IV (of which the NA75 is based on).

Obviously this maximum thickness is greater than what we have in-game (4.5 inches or 114.3m versus our current 89mm in-game) and would represent a significant buff to the Churchill NA75. To that end, I remember seeing a post somewhere on this forum where someone actually measured the maximum thickness of the Churchill Mk IV’s turret face but I cannot remember what measurement they got - nor can I find the post.

The issue doesn’t seem to have been reported on the bug reports page either. Perhaps the person who took those photos may read this post? Or perhaps someone has another source about the correct value for the turret face?

I realise the NA75 differs from the Mk IV due to it having a Sherman’s mantlet embedded in its face but the turret cheeks remain original and may have the incorrect thickness.

I look forward to hearing from anyone that knows more!

I’ve heard the book “Mr Churchill’s tank” is good for information - havent read it myself though.

this says 3.5
that may be with applique armour but im not sure the IV ever got applique

The Mk.IV turret is actually thicker in places than 3.5 inches due to the variability across the turret face. At the apex of the front curve around the mantlet, it should reach roughly 4.5-5 inches.
The bottom of the gun cut-out is roughly 11 cm, with the parts higher up being visibly thicker.

Unfortunately, they cut out a lot of the thicker portion seemingly on the NA75 in order to accomodate the Sherman gun mount.

Hmm, it does seemingly point to the upper part of the face on that diagram with the main part of the face omitted. I don’t think the cast turret Churchills ever got applique armour on the turret. Only the hull sides.

Ah! Wonderful! At least that sets the premise for if and when we get a Mk IV Churchill in-game. It’ll be tougher than the Mk III at least.

Do you happen to know if this section is an additional plate? Or just a trunnion mount?

The Mk IV turret looks roughly like this. Not a perfect diagram.

Top section above the mantlet is 3.5" and as it curves back it drops to 2", then finally the 1.375" for the roof.

The mantlet is 3.5 inches, the small squares to the top left and right of the mantlet have been measured to roughly 4". The larger section on the left and right of the mantlet is 4.5".

Below the mantlet is 3.5" and remains this thick until it meets the floor which is 1.25".

If you look at Fourche’s internal photos above, the increased armour thins out as soon as it passes those internal plates.

Great photos Fourche7, thank you for clearing that up! 😁

Thanks Jarms! 🫡

So the NA75 wouldn’t benefit from any of this which is a shame. Let’s up we get a Mk IV at some point in the near future and that’s modelled accurately!
