The CM-502KG multi-purpose air-to-surface missile was developed by the Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation and is a product with foreign trade as its main goal. Although it was not well known before, in fact, the CM-502KG was unveiled at the Zhuhai Air Show in 2012. The actual value of this missile comes from its unique design concept - CM-502KG is one of the earliest missile systems specially designed for UAV combat in China.
According to the scarce information that can be found publicly, the CM-502KG has a range of 25 km, a flight speed of Mach 1.1, and also has an 11 kg warhead that can penetrate 1000 mm thick homogeneous steel armor. It is obvious that the CM-502KG is much superior to the traditional light opposing attack missiles in terms of flight performance and attack performance. Combined with the development of other types of missiles in China in recent years, we can infer that the CM-502KG at least has a certain ability to guide independently, and even has the ability to leave it alone after launch. When mounted on a traditional UAV, the speed of Mach 1.1 not only ensures the timeliness of the strike during combat, but also improves the missile’s penetration capability. This makes the CM-502KG not only suitable for fighting fixed and slow targets such as tanks and strongholds, but also especially for high-speed and mobile targets such as small boats, which are very troublesome for many third world countries when conducting security wars (such as the Tamil “LTTE” boats during the Sri Lankan Civil War). Compared with the light shape of the missile, the 11 kg warhead is actually very impressive, combined with the speed of Mach 1.1, the single missile can effectively destroy the vast majority of small and medium-sized targets in conventional UAV operations, and the penetration of 1000 mm homogeneous steel armor is comparable to the level of professional anti-tank missiles.
