Background History
Development of the J-10 began in the 1980s under direction of the 611 Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute. The first flight of the J-10 prototype took place in 1998, with the J-10A entering PLAAF service in 2005.
This was followed by further developments such as the two-seater J-10S, acrobatic SY, AH and the J-10B with extensive improvements. Latter included a redesigned fuselage nose, a diverterless supersonic inlet (DSI), a PESA radar and extended weapons compatibility.
The J-10C, based on the J-10B, first flew in 2013 and entered service in 2016. It features an AESA radar, HMD/S system, IRST, internal ECM system, MAWS and a WS-10B engine.
The J-10CE export variant, first seen 2016, based on J-10C was specially adapted to foreign requirements and export restrictions. Pakistan opted for the J-10CE after the failed purchase of F-16C/D Block 52 from the US.
A contract for 20 J-10CEs, spare WS-10B engines and over 200x PL-15E missiles was signed in 2021. The first delivery was made in March 2022 to the 15th Wing of the Pakistan Air Force (“Cobras”). Whether further J-10CEs will be procured remains to be seen - in the long term, however, the Pakistan Air Force generally aims for a fleet size of at least 80 units for new aircraft types.
Armament of the J-10CE
A Type 23-3 with 200 rounds serves as the on-board cannon. Compared to the in-game J-10A, the J-10CE is a massive upgrade; new long-range PL-15E, very agile PL-10E, IRST and AESA radar, as well as new air-to-ground armament.
While AVIC has presented a J-10CE with additional underbelly pylons for BVRAAM in late 2024, whether Pakistan’s J-10CE is also capable of using them remains to be seen.
