Changes to Bomber Survivability

We probably need respawn in air RB

So - I’m an arcade player, and bombers left unchecked bombing bases and targets can sway a match, hell I’ve stolen wins from the spawn camping clowns by managing to get just enough ground targets on top of whatever my team might have while not running out of planes. However on average, their impact is minimal because of their easy destruction.

But when it comes to buffing gunners - I’m not talking about really extending the range, even if I was going to suggest a range increase for when they shoot it’d be from about .8km to 1km which would still leave most, if not all fighters with a near 2-1 range advantage if they open fire from further out (7.62 and similar rounds might be the only ones that are much lower on that range gap, but should still have room outside the gunners range). I’m talking about the fact that inside AI gunner range, sometimes well within it like only 3-500 meters off the back of the plane, the gunners can’t hit a plane who isn’t even maneuvering or barely is. I have literally sat there casually waiting on guns to reload in Arcade without the gunners - who were still shooting - able to hit me when I was barely moving. And trying to fly the plane, have watched my own gunners - who have the skills maxed out other than ace, not even touch a guy who was tailing me at 600m after he ran out of ammo (pre-bomb explosion issue) without totally shooting me down, and they never touched him while he was reloading, flying in a mostly straight line at matched speed - and the only reason it wasn’t a totally straight line was I was limping it in for a landing with the one of the wings no generating full lift so having to roll the plane to keep it level which meant there was a little side to side. I’m not looking for when these AI gunners were terminators that Skynet wish it had and even if you attacked a bomber head on you usually got shot down, but the AI gunners when they aren’t knocked out should not be so useless that somebody sitting in their firing range, flying in a straight or straight-ish line behind the plane, with no increase or decrease in range, should be completely untouched. Even the ‘you just trained the crew to the plane and they have no points in anything’ crew should be able to hit that guy.

Someone who can actually hit my bombers like I do to others beyond the range we get a lead point in Arcade (which is just inside bomber gunner range) - all props to them for hitting me and all outside a range my gunners can shoot at them. But if they come in to a range my gunners can shoot, they shouldn’t be able to sit there like I have no gunners at all - that needs to change, they need to at least be a marginal threat beyond when the stars align and they actually hit a pilot, or set a plane on fire. I mean - even ones that are supposed to be radar guided guns can’t hit a damn thing.

I wish they actually where implemented that way lol

I just wish they made the markers less obtrusive. Anything better would do rather than the giant circle that blocks my view of certain fighters from certain angles. Same with the RB player tags. They have no reason to be so obtrusive.

I have played sim with bombers and I know what you mean, but they could do plenty of other things to highlight targets better than the ones we have now. Even if it was ineffective AA shooting at you, lights, more contrast, anything else really.

Their low turret coverage is still gunna make them weak, and easier for fighters to sit in blind spots for longer

For British bombers, I feel that the bigger problems for them, is that they are only really using .303, so they do not real damage against a fighter.
Combine with that the rear gunner sits in a very visible, unarmoured glass cage at the tail, and is therefore more often dead than alive after an enemy engagement.

That and no night battles for them.

Will we finally make the flying fortress, a flying fortress, how it should be?

What we need is a better game mode than what ARB currently is

It’s called nuclear thunder and it’s very promising

Nah just have more than one gamemode, nuclear thunder is perfect for respawns/lineups gameplay

Imho these pics are difficult to refine. You only see images of bombers which obviously returned and landed more or less safely. There are almost no pictures from lethal hits. You see only the failures. Those cases where German Night Fighter pilots shot down several bombers with 20mm and 30mm mineshells were actually documented in mission reports, but you’ll never see any photos.

That means when you really balance the game just cause of footage from surviving crafts, youre doing it entirely wrong. Stonas post makes little sense imho. Its balancing according to survivior bias, which will completly kill the whole game.

Especially when devs just nerf mineshells while all others still lolkill. Most of this survivor footage is from the European Air War over the Reich. Guess it will be like Gajin did it witch Mineshell’s drag coefficient. Since only German tabs are aviable, they will accurately model German shells, while all others enjoy generic guesswork. Cal50 will probably still saw off wings and detonate bomb ordnance inside the bay… with a short brrrp.

It’s going to be called “Aerial Warfare”, if I remember correctly

But yeah, that’s definitely better than ARB, the Deep Strike mode also was way better than ARB

You’re getting survivorship bias wrong. Getting only pictures of aircraft that survived doesn’t invalidate the process, it just means you have to take it into account. You can still observe the effects of shots on certain areas to see what happened. When the engineers in ww2 observed the stats of damaged aircraft coming back and understood the bias, they didn’t give up, they took the bias into account, and Gaijin should do the same

I mean, you can tell where the weakspots are by looking at the parts that aren’t damaged, or at least no damaged nearly as much as other parts

Bombers need survivability buffs in-game, no matter what happened IRL

It was to be called aerial warfare a while ago but did they say that name again after nuclear escalation became available?

Pretty sure that Nuclear Escalation isn’t meant to be the final mode

I can’t imagine that what they are going for is a mode where you can just spam nukes

No. Cause it obviously didn’t work. This kind of reverse logic was ofc attempted, but the losses of the bomber command where extreme. Unprecedented. The planes which never returned simply provided no data. The wrecks where shattered on the ground in occupied territory. Surviving crew interned. No way to get the valuable kill data. Just watching failed shoot down attempts provide no base why the lost ones never returned.

Another point I assume to be critical is that fighters are still extremly paper. One short hit, even with rifle caliibres is the end. They drop their wings like … dunno…there is simply no precedent. Planes are too easy to shoot down in this game. Just adjusting bombers will create death stars once again. If its done, it should be a general revamp of air damage/models.

Obviously you can’t tell why certain ones never returned, but you can tell why others did return

You can tell which spots can be hit without causing the plane to just fall apart. The weakspots likely are the areas that didn’t get damaged.

Those spots aren’t guaranteed to be weakspots, but you can tell that the spots that did get hit definitely weren’t weakspots.

Using that knowledge Gaijin can make somewhat realistic adjustments. Things like making sure that wings and tail sections just breaking off from a single hit. There is a reason why bombers were reinforced and similarly there is a reason why planes built to destroy bombers carried bigger guns or even rockets.

That’s a seperate issue. However, I’ve seen fighters take way more punishment than bombers.

Most bombers currently are just RP/SL pinatas thanks to their size and how easy it is to cripple them from a distance.

Most bombers have huge blindspots, fighter pilots just never have to learn about ways to properly approach bombers because it is so easy to kill them without any meaningful risk.

The AI gunners still are nerfed into oblivion, so you really just have to learn common blindspots.

Most importantly, people will finally have to learn that flying behind a bomber is a huge mistake.

You presume that they aren’t just making it up as they go because they managed to luck on a product that users managed to like and made popular/engagement.
