yeah, my go to for the Spitfire is stealth belts which is HEI, HEI, SAP-I
Im probably gunna have to swap to Air Targets for the mix of HEI and the greater mix of SAP or maybe even straight swap to something like Universal with a AP-T in there too.
Gunna be kinda annoying in fighter vs fighter combat, but necessary if I want to be able to do damage to bombers.
Are you aware that many aircraft made to intercept bombers coughs Me262 coughs don’t have a single AP shell on their belt because the sheer amount of explosive of a 30mm shell was more than enough to completely rip off the tail section of a bomber? As you can see here near the end of the video
I do want to note here that that looks like a light bomer not a heavy bomer. I think its a Hudson. Not an aircraft designed to take a lot of punishment (actually was originaly designed as a civilian airliner)
But looking at the damage, I stand by my previous opinion on the issue. The issue with the old damage model was that small localised damage was applied to a very large area resulting in magnified damage. (i.e, a burst of 50 cal blowing a tail off) Now you have (for the lack of a better word) “HP” of that entire area to deal with, resulting in those same large parts being nearly immune to damage
What should have been done is breaking aircraft down, especially the heavy bombers, into smaller parts, with each individual part modeled correctly. Then you would see large HE shells doing the damage they should be doing. Whislt smaller calibre rounds shouldnt be.
Couple with actually modeling bits under the skin of the aircraft, so you dont have large voids of nothingness to just absorb damage, and you get the best of both worlds withwise to damage models.
Ignoring the fact that about 90% of your rounds at the Ju-88 missed, you can see them falling below the target. I still stand by my opinion of the issues with the current damage model
lack of internal modules that can be damaged, especially by HE
A few very very resistant large parts, rather than a lot of smaller parts with more localised resistance to damage.
Target bots also seem to be able to maintain control with no control surfaces. I need to take a spitfire or something into an actual battle and see if i can find some bombers to shoot at to give a more realistic opinion of what the damage models will be like
Out of the 290 ish rounds you fired in your second pass I reckon you landed maybe 15-20 (counting the actual explosions)
Now whether those 15-20 rounds should have done far more damage than it appears to have actually done is certainly a discusison to be had, but “I hit the target with 360 rounds and It did nothing” is a tad disingenious imo, given that a lot of those rounds missed.
Since precision fire is much more relevant now, updating aircraft modules is logical next step (and not just for top tiers, as has been the case so far). Maybe we could start by model volumes that are actually consistent. On the B-17, the 200-round ammo box is somehow larger than the 500-round one! And if we were to check if the volume of the fuel tanks actually matches the liters declared, I think we’d be in for a big surprise (they’re completely eyeballed!).
The fuel tanks are an honourable mention, given that you dont seem to be able to damage them. A few 50 cals sure, self-sealing is gunna handle that. But a dozen 20 or 30mm HE? (sure they’ll leak, slowly, but surely eventually you could set them on fire too? or failing that, cause them to drain rapidly.)
A good strafe along the wings could knock out all the fuel tanks.
