I think these holes are the same size as the bolts of Hull’s external armor
They probably are tbh, just look at the modular armour on there and how secure it is.

That hole on challenger 2 is for the backup auxiliary sight.

I dont think any part of the hull is thicker apart from the upper front plate, which is obviously significantly thicker due to the new armour arrays.
However, those six little circular protruding pieces are new, I wonder if they could be used to mount external armour. They could also be part of the fixings for the new internal armour as they seem to align perfectly with its angle.
