Personally I dont think that 130mm guns will become the new thing for a while, they still have some pretty huge drawbacks which hold NATO countries from using them.
The requirement for an autoloader often removing a crew member. NATO tanks are pretty big and from what I’ve heard 3 crew makes maintenance difficult.
Bigger gun → Bigger ammo → Less ammo → Less combat longevity
Bigger Gun → More weight → Not great considering NATO is trying to downsize their tanks at the moment.
Supply chain issues - Switching to 130mm makes all 120mm useless, not really want you want when a big war might be looming.
Improved ammunition - Better NATO ammo especially programmed HE making the need for 130mm shells less desperate.
For example Hungary are buying the KF51, but the 120mm version not the 130mm version.
But im by no means an expert, thats a few that I’ve heard which seem to make sense.
Also, the Challenger 3 turret as far as I’m aware was designed to be able to fit the 130mm RHM gun
Many countries don’t operate tanks alone. For example, French armored divisions have 2 scout cars for each tanks, with crew available for maintaining the tanks along side the tankers
But also means bigger impact per round fired. A 140mm with explosive filler will have better infantry impact. And armor piercing shell will penetrate more armored threats.
Also, most newer prototypes feature roof mounted remote controlled weapons for better effectiveness against infantry
But having an auto loader allows for smaller footprint than a manual loader, so you can gain weight that way
The French ASCALON 140mm aims to solve that issue. The chamber is compatible with all 120mm ammunition, is compatible with 140mm, and should be compatible with 130mm. Only the gun needs to be replaced and that can be achieved in 30 minutes. This way you can empty the 120mm stocks and switch to 140mm as you wish.
Also, the semi telescopic nature of the shell helps to have a smaller footprint than regular shells, meaning that vehicle equipped with the ASCALON would carry almost as much 140mm as they would 120mm, and auto loader would be compatible with both
Following this, we should all go back to 30mm, since technology has sufficiently advanced so that we can have smart munitions of that caliber
You can stay with 30mm but 35 is a better round to keep with if you expect to see a lot of thicker targets, it has much more volume than 30mm and much more pen from the AP rounds. 35mm has more “bang for your buck” than 30mm on average
And the same can be said from 105 to 120, from 120 to 130/140
When both the French ASCALON and the German 130 are still in the prototyping phase with no in service vehicles, it’s a bit early to be this salty for no reason lol.
ASCALON, and the German made 130mm, are mostly in competition for the MGSC. Until any of them wins the deal (or MGSC collapses and new vehicles are dvelopped independently), what will stay remains to be seen.
Anyway, even if the 130mm becomes the standard, ASCALON should still be able to fire that caliber, with an option of upscaling to 140 if necessary, so I am not afraid for the project
Missed the news germany is officialy developing a new im service tank as an inbetween with 130mm cannon until the mgcs is finished didnt you.
Germany has already contracted to put it into service. Leo 2AX /Leo 3 name yet to be decided
Italy/hungary and i think uk with chally 3 all retain the ability to upgrade tp 130mm as well
You are comparing the wrong things to argue with. 105 has shown that it still does work but it is too hard to make a continuously better shell so 120mm was used, same with the change to 130mm or 140mm.
What I’m saying is that 30mm AP has reached it end of being able to be effective at the same cost that a 35mm AP round will have, but for most militaries this seems region specific
And yet none of them are anywhere close to getting in service 130mm anytime soon :/.
Germany, to be precise rheinmetal is developing a tank with 130mm. Potentially as a last upgrade path or if the MGCS falls apart (which is possible.
As for Italy and Hungary, maybe they will use 130. Maybe not. Just for reference the Leclerc was initially developed wu to the idea of upgrading it to a 140mm cannon if necessary, which obviously did not happen (and explains the ungodly large and quite unprotected mantlet and why they did not keep the 20mm coaxial, as it would have taken too much space to add a 140 later down the line).
Rheinmetal is obviously trying to get its 130mm in service as soon as possible while ASCALON is still in development from KNDS (which I remind you is half German as well), as to make sure as to have the 130mm as the NATO standard. Because ASCALON is mainly for the 140mm, which rheinmetal does not aim to do, they’d be in trouble if it became the standard, while ASCALON can still retrofit to the 130mm.
