As a taxpayer, I’m very sad about this. It’s hard to imagine that our army will rely on the .50 machine gun on Boxer APC against the Russian BMP3.
We are steadily falling into the risk-aversion trap, in which we attempt so hard to design the perfect vehicle (to avoid dead soldier headlines) that we end up having zero vehicles on the battlefield. Yes a Javelin team can deploy from Boxer and destroy a tank or gun IFV provided conditions are correct, have fun trying that when a company of them have night marched up and are coming at you <2km at full speed.
Now that’s a mad minute!

I was also reading through chobham armour by William suttie. And did you know in 1987 they started the pip program to upgrade challenger 1s.
But during the pip program they drew up a few concepts of what challenger 1 upgrades could be and one of those concepts was to upgraded challenger 1 with a 140mm gun !!

I’ve seen in a snapshot of one of the two books about British armour a picture of a Chally 2 photographed from the engine deck showing the side of the vehicle with the varma tiles

I believe the plan is for the Boxers to be more-so just battle-buses, not meant to engage enemy armour or IFVs. They’re armoured to withstand artillery, infantry, and enemy IFVs - but only equipped to support friendly infantry in support against enemy infantry and light vehicles, and also to escape enemy IFVs.
Handling of enemy IFVs and armour is largely relegated to battlegroup assets, with their Exactor 2s/Boxer Overwatch, M270B2 GMLRS, and AS90/MFP. That is in tandem with efforts made by the Ajax scout IFV, Apaches, UAVs like the WK450, UCAVs like the Hydra 400, Jackal/Coyote light recce vehicles, Challenger 3s, and anti-tank units.
