History.
The Renault R35 was a light infantry companion tank designed by France during the 1930s. Over 1,500 examples were built, which initially armed the Armée de Terre until the nation’s surrender on 25 June 1940. After the French surrender, almost all of the tanks fell into the hands of the German occupiers, who put some of them into service. The considerable availability of captured vehicles allowed Germany to propose sending French tanks to its Italian ally. Initially, a large shipment of vehicles was proposed given the Italian shortage of tanks, but the shipment was reduced over time. The first batch of Renault tanks arrived in Italy in April 1941 and with the 104 Renault tanks that arrived, two battalions were armed, the CI and CII Tank Battalion. The battalions were sent to Sicily, and remained there until 1943. With the Allied invasion of Sicily, the tanks were used to attempt to contain the Anglo-American landing. Despite the heroic nature of the Italian tank drivers, their negligible numbers and very inadequate vehicles were defeated. The vehicles were all lost in the fighting and no one managed to follow the Italian-German troops who retreated to Calabria. Despite this, 18 Renault tanks were located in Italy: 4 were destroyed in a test of force and usable parts were subsequently recovered, while the fate of the other vehicles is unknown.
Armaments and propulsion.
The small tank was equipped with a 37 mm L/21 SA18 Puteaux gun and a 7.5 mm MAC 1931 coaxial machine gun. The paraphernalia was adequate for the early 1930s, but by 1940 the paraphernalia was outdated. 102 rounds were stored for the cannon, while 2,250 for the machine gun.
In terms of engine, the tank was powered by an 82 hp Renault V-4 petrol engine, which powered the tank up to a maximum speed of 20 km/h.
