But other than that, yeah tank building in France was pretty much done once Leclerc prod line was closed, and DGA, usually doing a decent job for procuring air and particularly naval assets, seems to have no idea what to do when it comes to ground stuff
Where this is the most obvious imo isn’t necessarily MBTs, but short range ground based anti air assets
Then again, french ground material is more expeditionary now, and invasion on continental france is unlikely these days. That coupled with the fact that the last barrier of defense are SSBNs.
MBTs building capabilities are therefore getting the short end of the stick.
But i digress.
At the end of the days, it’s preferable to lose the ability to produce tank hulls than Nuclear submarines or planes i’d say, especially when MBTs relevence is now uncertain (it may bounce back, it may not, but it’s not in a comfy place right now for sure)
An interesting thing :
It is specified in this sequence that not only is the crew in the hull, but there is no turret basket at all, since the gun does not go in the gull even at maximum elevation (about 20°), no matter the caliber (120 or 140)

uhhh mgcs is scrapped.
its now devolved to a technology sharing programm between france and germany.
So will be intresting what france will actualy do for the next real next generation mbt.
The CAPINT is only supposed to be a in between.
Germany still has MARTE for the chassis development
I could see the “in between” becoming a permanent solution, since, if i had to guess, ground things will probably get the short end of the stick when it comes to budget

Well France might end up buying the chassis, just like they are doing now with leopard ones that being said. Of course not having a lot of decision choice how it actualy ends up.

It seems they’ll insist on getting an Ascalon, and french sensors, but the chassis will be german that’s for sure
They over engineered the Leclerc chassis / engine and don’t seem to be too keen on repeating the adventure
MTU has proven to do reliable engines, so why not (although idk who will be developping the engine for MARTE)
France either have to buy MARTE or leopard 3 OR develop their own tank (what they don’t have the infrastructure for or money to develop something bran new)
Capint is not finished, its supposed to be the equivalent

And the capint is not a leo 2a8 equivalent, it gets an unmanned turret with a new encapsuled chassis design. its a step above the 2a8 but not completly next gen yet

Germany only realy next gen tank is the MARTE project.

The whole point of the leo 3 is a bridge gap solution until the next real generation tank with a newly designed chassis. Its not defined as a next gen currently, you got that one completly wrong
The capint is not a 2a8 equavilant, but a bridge gap solution.
While yes, the MGCS project devolved, this doesnt changed the status of the capint as a bridge gap closer
