Aside from all the other advice you will get, it has hydropneumatic suspension. It is “only” up and down, but it can go WAY down. I usually prefer to use the suspension fully down for city type maps. Makes it bounce/lean less and just feels tighter handling for me. Also makes you a much smaller/harder target to hit.
Conversely you can put the suspension all the way UP to try and peak over hills.
Aside from the suspension you have an EXTREMELY fast reverse speed, and reverse acceleration. You should be reversing if possible when you are reloading. It is simply too fast to require in place reloading.
If you have not used hydro suspension before, these are the only 3 keybinds you will need for the XM-1. I would very strongly recommend setting the “Centre suspension” keybind as this will allow you to easily reset the suspension to default, which is MUCH better for off road travel. The higher suspension is not great for long distance off road, pretty much with all hydro suspension vehicles, imo. I always reset to center before traveling far, if it is not a city map.
Definitely go into a test drive for a little bit and mess around with the suspension and see how it feels, see which up/down you prefer for on and off road.
Ok and onto ammo storage, no matter which ammo types you eventually choose, I would strongly recommend ONLY taking in 25 rounds (showing +30 in the menu) because this will only store ammo in the 2 blowout panel areas. These usually will let you survive if you get shot in the ammo.
It has been a long time since I used the XM-1 much, so the best ammo types might be different now, and you might prefer different amos (like maybe taking in some smokes etc). Since it has a laser rangefinder, I most often use the HEATFS shells and hang back a bit and “snipe” people. The darts are so low pen I almost never use them, buuuuuut again other players might choose darts only, and the game has changed a bit since I used it much. See what other player’s think about ammo too.
If only HESH worked properly I would ADORE using this tank more. But as of now, I think that HESH is still not working properly. You could try some out, but meh, for me I just use HEATFS over HESH for pretty much any vehicle that has both, and no HE option.

This ☝️ It is an “MBT” but it is better suited to play it like a light tank/sniper. While it is an ancestor of the Abrams tanks, it does NOT have the armor that the Abrams has 😂
This is another reason I like the HEATFS shells, you do not lose penetration at distance, and there are not that many tanks with ERA at these BR’s. And even if you find a tank with ERA, if you are far away, you should have enough time to get multiple shots off and burn off their ERA to then get into their main armor.
OR a dart might actually work better for the M60A1 / A3’s, you will have to test. Ah ok yeah, for some early ERA tanks, darts might actually be better for first shot pen. You will figure it out eventually lol. Keep spawning, keep shooting, it is a fun tank 🍻

Honestly, i treat mbts as light tanks.
Treat non-pens to your armor as a bonus rather than an expectation.
