History and Description

In 2016, the Military Technical Institute (VTI) of Serbia revealed an upgraded version of the BVP M-80A tracked IFV, called the BVP M-80AB1. The vehicle is actually a BVP M-80A/98 from 2004 with added armor and modern optics, as well as the famous Malyutka 2T5 missiles. Therefore, the overall design remained the same. The driver is located at the front left of the hull with the engine to his right, the one-man turret is placed in the middle, and the troop compartment is at the rear of the vehicle. The BVP M-80AB1 is upgraded with additional armor mounted on the hull and turret. It protects against 30 mm AP rounds from the front, 14.5 mm from the side, and 7.62 mm from the back. Consequently, the vehicle lost its amphibious capability and experienced a substantial drop in mobility. The IFV is fitted with an M91E I/II turret armed with a stabilized Zastava M86 30x210B autocannon. On top of the turret is a 7.62 mm machine gun and two launchers for Malyutka 2T5 missiles. Compared to their predecessors they are faster, have a longer range, and penetrate up to 1000 mm of RHA behind ERA. Unlike older wire-guided variants, these feature radio guidance. Additionally, a thermal sight was installed in place of the old gunner’s day/night sight.
