USS England (DE-635)
Hello everybody. I’d like to suggest the USS England (DE-635) of the Buckley Class. The Buckley class was the second class of the destroyer escorts and was a successor of the Evarts class, and the USS England (DE-635) was the most decorated destroyer escort of the class with ten battle stars and the United States Presidential Unit Citation for its World War II service.
History
The Buckley-class destroyer escorts were a group of 102 ships launched by the United States during 1943 and 1944. They primarily served in roles such as convoy protection and anti-submarine warfare. A key design improvement over the earlier Evarts-class was the extension of the hull, a change that proved so effective it was adopted in all subsequent destroyer escort classes. General Electric’s steam turbo-electric drive systems were installed to power these ships.
USS England (DE-635) was launched in San Francisco on September 26, 1943, and officially commissioned on December 10 of the same year. She later performed escort duties between Espiritu Santo and Guadalcanal in March 1944. During her service, England achieved remarkable success in anti-submarine warfare by sinking six Japanese submarines (I-16, RO-104, RO-106, RO-116, RO-108, and RO-105) within just 12 days using hedgehog anti-submarine weapons. This feat earned the ship a Presidential Unit Citation for exceptional performance.
Throughout the summer of 1944, England operated in the northern Solomon Islands, delivering supplies and escorting garrison reinforcements across the Southwest Pacific. She later played a supporting role in the Leyte invasion in October 1944 and took part in the Okinawa campaign in April 1945.
On May 9, 1945, England was targeted and engaged by three Japanese dive bombers. Although the ship’s anti-aircraft defenses downed one attacker, another crashed into her starboard side. The crew quickly responded to the ensuing fires, successfully preventing further explosions and saving the ship. She withdrew from Okinawa and sailed to Leyte for temporary repairs.
Sailing wounded, England had arrived in Philadelphia by July 16, 1945, for full repairs and was slated for conversion into a high-speed transport. However, due to the extent of the damage, the conversion was cancelled. The ship was decommissioned on October 15, 1945, and sold for scrapping on November 26, 1946.
