The BTR-87, modernized by VPK with a completely new layout.
- Description :
- The BTR-87 is a revolutionary design that was developed by Russia’s Voyenno-Promishlennaya Kompaniya, or VPK in the early 2010’s based off of the BTR-80. The BTR-87 made its debut in 2015 during ARMY-2015, a military exhibition held in Russia, featuring an 8x8 chassis, the same as the BTR-80, while sporting a BPPU Combat Module equipped with a 2A72 30mm autocannon and a PKTM 7.62mm coaxial machine gun, the same module used on the BTR-82A APC with the TKN-4GA sighting system which is a passive IR system that can be upgraded to a thermal viewer . The BTR-87 is powered by a 312hp YaMZ-53602 Diesel Engine, which is coupled to a new manual transmission that uses a 5-to-1 gear ratio which allowed for a maximum speed of 90km/h. The engine is located in the front of the vehicle next to the driver which allowed for the design of two rear doors for passenger dismount rather than the two side doors. This increased crew survivability by easing access to exits, especially during emergencies. Even with this layout, the vehicle retains its amphibious capabilities with two propulsors and a splash guard. Due to engine being located in the front, the Combat Module was relocated to the center of the vehicle, taking on a Western-style approach. In terms of armor protection, the BTR-87 features 12.7mm frontal protection and 7.62mm all around protection, however it is equipped with a kevlar-lining, significantly improving survivability against IED’s, mines, and artillery shrapnel. Development continued and in 2017 during the military exposition ARMY-2017, a modernized variant was shown equipping more firepower in the form of two dual-Kornet ATGM launchers located on both sides of the BPPU module, similar to the ‘Berezhok’ Combat Module, along with the 2A72 30mm autocannon and PKTM 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The hull and power pack remain unchanged. In 2019, the most modernized variant of the BTR-87 debuted at ARMY-2019 featuring Burevestnik Scientific Institute’s 32V01 Remote Control Weapon Station (RCWS) which is equipped with a fully stabilized Shipunov 2A42 30mm Autocannon which uses the 30x165 cartridge capable of firing multiple types of ammunition, including the 3UBR11 APFSDS-T. For anti-armor capabilities, the BTR-87 features an Ataka-T dual ATGM launcher capable of firing variants of the 9M120 anti-tank guided missile, engaging both ground, and air targets. It is also equipped with a 7.62mm PKTM coaxial machine gun for additional self-defense purposes. The Gunner utilizes an advanced fire control system which is tethered to a 3rd-generation Thermal Imager/TV electro-optical device with an integrated laser rangefinder for target tracking capabilities. The Commander utilizes a 3rd-generation panoramic independent thermal viewer to track targets, assisting the Gunner regardless of time of day. The Driver utilizes day periscopes along with the TVN-4E, a passive IR night vision scope for night operations. The hull and power pack remain unchanged from the other two previous modernizations. The crew is also equipped with the VHF (Very High Frequency) R-168-25-U2 Radio Station for the use of encrypted communication. The BTR-87 is one of the most advanced variants of the BTR-82A/BTR-80 family, featuring several improvements in the form of firepower, maneuverability, and crew survivability. The BTR-87 has not been accepted into the Russian military due to using the BTR-82A, however the primary focus for this vehicle is export sales. No country has adopted the BTR-87.

- In-game :
- The BTR-87 is a completely new take on wheeled vehicles for the USSR tree. The BTR-87, unlike all other BTR’s features a new layout with the engine in the front of the vehicle, allowing it to take more punishment and protect the crew from some penetrating rounds. By doing this, the turret was relocated to the center of the vehicle, which features heavy weaponry to take on all targets as well as an independent imager for the Commander which is especially useful in simulated missions. The BTR-87 sports an unmanned turret which decreases exposure of the crew as well as allowing the operator more advantages of being in a hull down location. The BTR-87 however has little armor, and relies on its mobility and firepower to flank targets, scout, and capture points.
- The BTR-87 would make a great premium, event, or squadron vehicle.
- Estimated Battle Rating: 9.3
