BTR-82AT: Heavy-duty Firepower

Description :
- The BTR-82A is an 8x8 Armored Personnel Carrier that was developed from the BTR-80A. Development of the BTR-82A began in between 2009 and 2010 by Arzamas Machine-Building Plant (AMZ) that featured multiple improvements over the original BTR-80A. This included an turbo-charged 8-cylinder 4-stroke V-shaped Diesel Engine, named the KamAZ-740.14-300 that produced 300hp which provided a significant increase in maneuverability and reliability. This was coupled to a new manual transmission that featured a 5-to-1 gear ratio which allowed for a maximum speed of 80km/h. One of the main features of the vehicle however is the increased in crew survivability. The BTR-82A features 12.7mm frontal protection and 7.62mm all around protection, however equipped with a kevlar-lining, significantly improving survivability against IED’s, mines, and artillery shrapnel. It is also equipped with 360-degree Bar armor to protect against HEAT-shaped charges as well as additional ballistic armor covering the frontal arc. The BTR-82AT however, is a further development of the BTR-82A, either retaining the renown BPPU Combat Module or by mating the DUBM BTR-BM Combat Module.
- The BPPU Combat Module which features a fully stabilized 2A72 30mm Automatic Cannon capable of a rate of firing of 330rpm with 300rds ready to fire. It can also fire all rounds of the 30x165 cartridge. The BPPU Combat Module also is equipped with a PKTM 7.62mm machine gun for additional self-defense purposes. To fire the main gun, the Gunner previously utilized the TKN-4GA-02 day/night fire control system to engage targets in day or night conditions through the use of passive IR sighting. Later on however, the Russian army upgraded the sights on some BPPU Combat Modules. This was the TKN-4GA-03 thermal imaging fire control system featuring a clearer, uncooled thermal camera installed within the sight which further increased the Gunner’s capabilities. The TKN-4GA-03 Thermal Imager became standard on the BTR-82AT variant. The BPPU module can also mount an ATGM launcher on the rear of the turret, but must be operated from outside the vehicle.
- The DUBM BTR-BM Combat Module, also known as the ‘Ballista’, is developed by Voyenno-promyshlennaya kompaniya, or VPK, to the BTR-82A hull resulting in significantly increased anti-tank capabilities. Making its debut in 2021 at the Army-2021 military exhibition, the BTR-BM Combat Module comes equipped with the 2A42 30mm autocannon that utilizes the 30x165 cartridge. Also equipped is two anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) launchers on both sides of the turret that can fire the 9M133M Konkurs-M missile capable of penetrating modern main battle tanks. These weapons can be fired by the Gunner using a new advanced fire-control system equipped with a 3rd-generation thermal camera as well as an integrated laser rangefinder for target ranging as well as providing guidance for the ATGM’s. The thermal imager increases overall effectiveness at night to around 3km. For equipping the Konkurs-M ATGM launchers, some space in the rear of the vehicle for personnel was reduced in order to provide additional storage space for extra Konkurs missiles.
- Other than the Gunner, other sights include the Commander’s TKN-AI combined day/night periscope with rangefinder capable of locating targets for the Gunner. The Driver is equipped with the TVN-4E Passive IR periscope. The BTR-82AT crew is also equipped with the VHF (Very High Frequency) R-168-25-U2 Radio Station, enabling long distance, secure communications. The BTR-82AT features the same hull, drivetrain, and armor capabilities of the BTR-82A and can provide valuable fire support for mobile infantry. Two main differences between the BTR-82A and BTR-82AT is the installation of a mount for a Kornet ATGM launcher and tripod within the vehicle, and the 360-degree Bararmor. The BTR-82AT is a better protected variant of the BTR-82A, and has already been integrated into the Russian Army with the BPPU combat module. The BTR-BM combat module’s status in service remains unknown.

In-game :
- The BTR-82AT is a powerful IFV that relies on speed and firepower to knock out its targets. Featuring little to no armor, only capable of protecting against 7.62mm up to 12.7mm rounds and artillery shrapnel thanks to its kevlar-lining, the BTR-82AT is quite fragile but can be equipped with additional ballistic plating and Bar armor at the cost of its amphibious capabilities to increase its protection against HEAT-shaped charges. This also helps protect the vehicle from hull-breaking mechanics. The BTR-82AT’s features a rapid firing 30mm autocannon with the capability to fire the 3UBR11 APFSDS-T rounds that can make very quick work of vehicles ranging from light tanks and IFV’s, to main battle tanks and modules. The vehicle is also equipped with a highly capable Gunner’s 3rd-generation Thermal Imager to engage targets at night as well as, if the BTR-BM Combat Module is equipped, the very effective Konkurs-M ATGM capable of penetrating main battle tanks with ease. One thing to note is that the BTR-82AT cannot fire the Konkurs-M on the move. Operators are recommended to take advantage of its unmanned turret and remain in hull down positions if required to engage targets head on.

Post is updated to reflect the BPPU or BTR-BM Combat Modules. The BTR-82AT itself is the same vehicle as this one, it’s just whether or not the vehicle has the BPPU or BTR-BM combat modules installed.

Currently, the BTR-82AT with the BPPU Combat Module is in Russian service.

The BTR-82AT with supports for the gun to aid in accuracy. The 2A72 tends to have issues with excessive barrel wobble.
