The BTR-22, the latest, improved version of the BTR-series that could potentially enter service with Russia.
The vehicle equipped with the BTR-BM ‘Ballista’ combat module.
- Description :
- The BTR-22, also known improved BTR-82, is an 8x8 Armored Personnel Carrier that was developed from the BTR-82A as a private venture by the Military Industrial Company LLC (MIC), or VPK, as an alternative to the long-term “Boomerang” platform. The BTR-22 features a unique design compared to its contemporaries by having a completely new V-shaped armored hull with a rear troop exit, rather than the folding ramps found on the sides of the original BTR-82A. The BTR-22 features a front-mounted engine, with the eight-person troop compartment in the rear, a new direction that follows Western-practice. It uses some components from the BTR-82A, such as the suspension, but has a new 330hp YAMZ 536 turbo-diesel engine and five-speed manual transmission due to the increase in weight from 15.4t to 20t. Even with the increase in weight, the vehicle retains its amphibious capabilities from the BTR-82A.The armor protection is reported to be simplified compared to the Boomerang, with ballistic protection against 12.7mm armor-piercing rounds and 2kg mine blast protection. The prototype shown at Army-2023 forum was equipped with the BPPU combat module from the BTR-82A, featuring a fully stabilized 30mm 2A72 cannon and 7.62mm PKTM machine gun. The Gunner is equipped with a 3rd-generation TKN-4GA-03 thermal imager and the commander a TKN-AI passive-IR periscope. The vehicle can also equip other combat modules like the unmanned BTR-BM “Ballista” combat module with a 30mm 2A42 autocannon, coaxial 7.62mm PKTM machine gun, and Konkurs-M ATGMs, or the B05S01 Berezhok combat module, but this has only been seen in brochures.
- At Army-2024, a modified prototype of the BTR-22 was unveiled that had equipped the LGSh-689 Electronic Warfare/Jammer Receiver and a ‘cope cage’ to protect against FPV ‘suicide’ by jamming the drones first with secondary cage protection.
- Overall, the BTR-22 appears to be a more affordable and simplified alternative to the Boomerang platform, intended to replace the aging BTR-80/82 series of armored personnel carriers. While not as advanced as the Boomerang, it offers improved capabilities and survivability over the legacy BTR-series vehicles, making it a potentially attractive option for Russian and foreign militaries.

- In-game :
- The BTR-22 is a revolutionary infantry fighting vehicle that relies on speed and firepower to achieve its objectives of either flanking or capturing points. The vehicle has 3rd-generation thermal imagers for night fighting, and powerful ammunition to make quick work of any vehicle. If it uses the BPPU combat module, it would solely rely on targeting the weak points of vehicles with its 3UBR11 APFSDS-T rounds, if it has the Ballista, it can pair the APFSDS-T rounds with two of its deadly Konkurs-M ATGM’s. It’s worth noting that the ATGM’s are slow which makes it easier for evasion. It’s best to flank and ambush targets, using the mobility to quickly maneuver about.
- Estimated Battle Rating:
- BPPU Combat Module: 9.3
- Ballista Combat Module: 9.7
